It’s November and I still haven’t done the deferred maintenance I wrote about back in September! Lmao, life gets busy, you know?

My wife broke the old driver's side door handle so ordered a new one. Looks beautiful and is very weighty.

This Saturday, my buddy, my wife and I are traveling to Merritt Motors in Kannapolis, NC, which is about 3.5hrs away from me to get our rides dry iced and coated. I’m driving the green one of course. My buddy has one almost identical to my ‘93 so it’ll be the three of us rolling together. Should be fun.

I got you. I’m bringing two of mine and one from my friend, so we might get a special rate.

The last 40th on BaT that got his treatment was $3300 and he told me the truck was pretty dirty and needed work. I like what he has to say about his vision and mission. He seems to care deeply about his craft. He assigns a lead tech to your vehicle to be the liaison for you and to help you make decisions along the way. For example, if they come across stubborn areas or corrosion beyond a certain limit, they will consult with you about the best way forward as it aligns with your goals.

Anyway, lots of words. I’ll let the pictures and invoice do the talking in about two weeks.

Regarding my loss of oil, I’m not seeing any blue smoke or drops below the cruiser, yet I’m adding about 1 qt every 1,000 miles. I think I read that’s about right. Maybe time for a rebuild?

What do you think?
A healthy catalytic converter can do a surprisingly good job of hiding smoke.
 
Damn, three 80s? You got the sickness boy!

In regards to oil loss, most likely worn out/ rock hard valve stem seals. They'll see you burn 1 litre every oil change cycle.
They can be changed without taking the head off, and maybe worth doing if every thing else is purring like a kitten.

You asked about 2nd row seat anchor bikes. I've found them to be a PITA. The front brackets has bolts opposed at 90-ish⁰, so it can be hard to get them positioned so both holes line up without ruining threads.

If you haven't bought taps for chasing threads, you want to find a set that has metric fine taps, not just standard metric. The hardware Toyota uses is JIS which is typically fine thread pitch

The stuff he uses is supposed to be low build and it appears it is. I have yet to put a wrench or socket to determine if it’s low-build enough.

Overall I’m happy. The white cruiser took 8hrs of labor and the green one 8.5 hrs.

Lmao, in my haste, I didn’t realize I posted the wrong pictures. This is my buddies white 80. I just saw the OME shocks and Delta rear panhard and thought you myself, hmmmm when did I do that? Oh yeah, I didn’t do that to my white 80 yet.

Anyway, his 80 had a lot of rust. I think he bought it out of Mississippi and it had time in Michigan. It looks good. Once I find my white 80s before and after, I’ll post them up.
 
I finally got around to doing the knuckles. Yes, I procrastinated over the entire winter. “Too cold. My vagina hurts. I have a headache.” You get it.

Anyway, glad I haven’t been driving her. She drives very well with the exception of downhill braking. When I brake going downhill, I get a lot of wheel shake. I assumed it was due to my brakes and/or needing to do the knuckles.

I had a little play on the passenger side at 12 & 6 o’clock. Nothing alarming, but play nonetheless. Time to get after it. Besides, I have my indentured servant (my son) to be my tool bǐtch and proverbial dog I kick. Especially when a mother effing tie rod gives out and it won’t separate for the LIFE OF ME from the steering knuckle forking thing. Smashed it like I did my wife on our first date? Yep. No go! Brought out the big boy hammer? Yep. No go! Rented tiered separator? Yep. No go! Bought my own tie rod separator? Yep. No go! Borrowed my neighbors pickle fork? Yep, bent the shǐt out of it. No go! Torch? Yep. No go! Onto step 6 x 12 ish to numb my pain.

Anyway check out these trunion bearings; multiple were worn beyond acceptable limits and were due to imminently fail causing a catastrophic accident on N I-81 resulting in numerous fatalities including a bus full of nuns and children. Despite the horrendous accident, the Toyota Land Cruiser directly responsible for this accident, drove away after a quick field repair of the hubs…

That’s my boy getting after it. New rotors, calipers, pads and new Toyota extended brake lines are next.

I hope to be rid of the shakes wheel on downhill braking like I mentioned in my previous post.

Also, if anyone knows a better way to remove that motherforking tie rod, I’m all ears.

Now that there out it well be easy next time.
In the past I have had to get a cheater bar and wage it under the axle housing and have a buddy stand on it while I beat on it. I know others will cringe!
I have never had much luck with that type puller 🤷‍♂️
I've had better lucky with this style. and a impact gun Pops them off lickety split.

Grab two decent size hammers and clobber that steering arm around the tie rod end with both hammers simultaneously opposed after you heat up. Also smack it on the very end applying the force of the blow in line wth the steering arm. Do it like you mean it Pell!

@Broski I ordered the tool, thanks for the recommendation! @baldilocks thanks for the tip…I applied a lot more heat and it finally separated. Man what an ordeal! Time to get back to work!
