Why do I do this to myself! I’ve officially reached the self loathing portion of this project. Good thing I have a financially committed time frame to reach.

Would certainly help if I didn’t get punched in the face by my corded grinder. Little bastard!

Pics to come. Inter webs aren’t webbing correctly ATM.

Still need to make sure it’s 97% square before I finish weld the extensions. Then scab plates. Then trans and doubler mounts. Then cab reassignment surgery.

And then……..

Well holy crap. Guess I didn’t bother to take enough measurements before this project. I know for a fact that my extensions are within an 1/8” of each other. But my axle centerline front to rear is 1/2” different left compared to right. And at this exact moment, I’m not sure which is crooked. The shackle reversal is welded on the front in the same place on both sides, and the center line to front leaf bushing bolt center line is the same on both sides. Plus it also drove well.

So I’m inclined to think the rear is off. I’ll have to go do some more deciphering. Wow.

Ding Ding Ding!!!!! We have a winner.

The right side frame rail shorter than the left side at all points behind the front leaf, front mounting pin.

So basically, the left front has been stretched in length, or the left front frame jump over the front axle has been pushed down aggressively and flattened, thus causing the longer frame.

Best bet is it was REALLY stuck, and they REALLY tried winching or yanking it free, in turn stretching the frame.

Man. It drove ok. Granted I didn’t do a lot of highway, I had it at 65/70 for at least 8 miles with no handling issues aside from the stiff springs. Due to my time crunch, the not poor handling, and the fact it’s getting linked with 80 series axles in a year or two, I’m inclined to leave it be.

Thoughts from the hive?

P.S. the link process will either receive completely new frame rails, or at minimum, all new rails from the firewall forward.

I guess i do not see why you would not fix it now and get it squared up ?

I’d fix it now. The San Juan mountains have been around for millions of years.

Are you absolutely sure that your front frame rails are different lengths? It would take an extreme amount of force to flatten a section of frame. It would seem that sort of force would bend the frame rail before it would flatten it.

I would think the body mounts would not line up also

Based on all the measurements I’ve made, yes. But I have a few more to do. It was late last night, and it’s been a long 4 day. I’m back to work this evening, so I’ll get some more measurements before I leave.

Guess I’ll be setting the cab back on before the finish welds and drivetrain placement is final. That’s all part of the next 4 day.
