Hey now. Not all of us folks in older 470s are low-class rednecks. Some of us like a reliable and capable 4x4 that's cheap enough to use without fear of scratching it (and I sure use mine a lot). Although, I'm a generation older and a couple of rungs higher in educational attainment and tax bracket than the folks you are referring to :).

Or, maybe we can all be a little less judgmental :).

LOL, I have nothing against the the 470's, it's the one generation I never had the luxury of owning. I am just saying that it appears that group has been taken over by that crowd.

There is no such 470 "group" here in the Ozarks :). TBH I rarely see built 470s anywhere - on my wheeling trip to CO last year, I don't recall seeing any. On our camper trip to WY/MT/SD this year, I only saw a handful of them. I far more frequently see folks well into their 60s or 70s driving stock 470s - presumably they bought them new and have just kept driving them.

Mine may eventually get replaced with a 550 when they have depreciated enough and the reliability is proven.

There are quite a few stock and built 470's still running around down here in TX.

Funny, when I was going to grad school at UT in the aughts I really didn't like GX470s (and Austin was full of GXs in the aughts). I thought they were weird looking and a status symbol for upper-income people in their 40s and 50s, as well as a cash-cow for Lexus (I didn't know how well built they were at that time). Now I own one and absolutely love them :).

Oh, I definitely wanted one when they were new, but I simply couldn't afford one, at least not new at the time. By the time I graduated and was making decent cash, the 460 had dropped, and I bought one of those instead.

A few adds/accessories showed up this week.

Garmin X210 Dashcam and Dongar Tech power adapter harness.

New cargo light works like a charm. I can see all the way to next Thursday in there now.

Roof and a-pillars wrapped in black, and the full front half PPF is complete. Momma is happy. I really think it needs a slightly larger tire and maybe some different wheels.

I threw a post up in the GXOR subreddit, and I couldn't believe the hate it received. Calling my wife a poser, making fun of it being a mall crawler, etc. That's not the Toyota crowd I remember, kind of blown away by how douchey and beta-cuck the atmosphere was in the comments. One dude saying he'd smash on my wife, absolutely insane response.
Losers!

and the 250/550 attracts the bro 4runner types. This is a byproduct of 'whoring' out the Land Cruiser badge.

Sadly, this is true.

ha. that's reddit.

The 250s/550s I've seen around here are generally being driven by middle-age women and men in their late 40s/early 50s. The "Land Cruiser" badge means nothing to most of the buyers, it's just a good-looking Toyota SUV to them. I'm betting many of them think the 250 in particularly is a "new Land Cruiser" and have little if any knowledge of the previous LC iterations.

and this is why they are seen as mall crawlers, posers, etc......as stated on reddit

where if we got the 'real' Cruisers (eg. utilitarian 300 series and/or 70 series) then that would get the respect and not seen as lesser-than

The price point has made them more attractive to the crowd that was formerly out of reach. I find this to be the case with the 250 LC more so than the 250 GX. The badge carries some weight with those who haven't owned a LC in the past, but most are still oblivious to the heritage behind the badge. As always, the GX attracts the middle-aged women; my wife is a perfect example of that. Either way, the flat bill bro crowd has arrived and are very much active in the 250 LC scene now.

At the end of the day, I should have known better and left Reddit to read only and not participated haha.

There is a >50% chance I'll pick up a 550 in 5-10 years when my GX470 ages out, and the 550 has sufficiently depreciated to the point that I wouldn't lose sleep over scratching it up off road :). As to what people are - or are not - using them before prior to that, I personally don't care - it's their money and their vehicles.

I can't speak for TX or NC but the flat bill bro crowd around here vastly prefers diesel trucks, Jeeps, Raptors, and the occasional TRX over Toyotas :).

I will have to agree with you here. Posting a pic of your lady in a Reddit thread full of BRO-testo would not have yield a different outcome.

Yep yep...my neighbor down 2 houses to the left bought a white 250 Prado for his wife. We cross paths once in a while - I am driving my 200HE and I bet an arm and a leg she has noooo idea the two cars are remotely related. She probably identifies her Prado more with the other neighbor that drives an LR Defender (when it is around and not at the shop ). It is so clear to me that Toyota took a page of Land Rover's book when designing the new Prado to appeal the suburbanites of upscale neighborhoods. Nothing wrong with that though. I only take issue with whoring out the LC name, but that is a whole nother story.

Funny, my wife thinks the LC250 looks great, as well as the 3rd gen Sequoia. She's never expressed that about any other Toyota SUVs - and that includes my GX. BUT, she vastly prefers the daily usability and driving dynamics of her Hybrid Highlander for mom duties as opposed to a midsize BOF SUV. Believe me, I tried very, very hard to get her in a Nori Green 2023 GX instead of her Highlander, but ultimately conceded and found her a Highlander instead.

Toyota probably saw that attitude and metaphorically put a cigarette out on it by burning Land Cruiser into the Prados to remind you and your entourage that they’re Land Cruisers too. Enjoy the forever reminder. have a nice day.

Hey Tex,

Sorry you had to deal with all that crapola on the photos. I think the truck looks awesome and so great that your bride chose the B/W outfit to match. Cant wait to watch your build. My beloved 200 was T-boned recently and is totaled. I put my name on the list for a GX OT+ today. Looking forward to it!
