Tech Day- 81 Bj42 clutch replacement (Abbotsford)

Is anyone interested in helping me replace the clutch on Scott Coleman's BJ42?

Scott is not yet a club member but I know him through the BC Toyota 4WD group.

CHANGE IN LOCATION. The storage lot owner won't allow us to work on the truck in his private yard (it's loaded with very expensive equipment I guess).

NEW LOCATION: My house 34448 Kent Ave. Abbotsford. However, Scott still needs to find out how to get his truck there. So stay tuned for final confirmation!

That's a pretty heavy transmission and transfer case to pull out by hand...
can you support it from above?

Are you going all out and getting the flywheel machined as well? If it has not been done in a long time I would highly recommend it. If you don't it might chatter and then you have to do it all over again. If you are going to get it machined, make sure to use a shop that has a good flywheel surface grinder and they know that the Toyota flywheel has a step in it. Otherwise it will not contact properly and it will slip.
I will likely not be able to come but if you need a transmission adapter for a floor jack I have one and it makes life a lot easier. If you're on gravel, just lay down a piece of 1/2" plywood and you can roll around pretty easily.
If you are pulling the flywheel, a small compressor and some air tools will make life so much better.
Call me if you want to borrow the transmission attachment.

As an alternative, you can tell Scott the truck is not worth the effort and I will, because of my good nature, buy it from him and rid him of his headaches

I think Scott wants to have the flywheel machined. I didn't with mine, but I caught it early, so it's it didn't need it. I don't know the condition of his.

I might borrow your transmission adapter; I had one for when we did my clutch but for the life of me I can't find it now?

By memory, a 3B does not have a stepped flywheel, unlike most other cruiser clutches.

I'm pretty sure it does. I took mine to the guy that builds the flywheel grinders that most shops use today (Delta Custom Tools). He's got the total car bible of all flywheel specs. When he did my 3B flywheel it had a step in it, can't recall the actual value but I can find out on Monday if it's needed.
Rob, you know my number, if you or Scott are in the area of the tri-cities, call me and we'll meet up so I can lend you the transmission adapter.

I will try to make it too, either day is fine. Hopefully the clutch kit comes with the alignment tool and would be good to have something to pull the pilot bushing or the bolt and grease trick works.

I have a slide hammer puller I can lend you guys as well. Most clutch kits these days come with a plastic alignment tool. I might still have mine.

Yes, when you pull the transmission, take the flywheel out and mullet. You won't want to repeat all that.

I did my bj60 clutch a few years back over christmas holidays (thanks again to Greg B for helping me out with some advice at that time). My truck had an aisin clutch and flywheel had no step, which surprised me because I was expecting one. Clutch wasn't yet slipping so no hot spots or heat cracks in flywheel. It was holidays and machine shops were closed so I just used a sanding block and solvent and lightly scuffed the wear surface for the new clutch lining to seat. Worked fine for me, kind of like not machining brake rotors that aren't warped and being careful while the surfaces seat.

Wasn't so sure about the flat flywheel so searched around and couldn't find definitive specs. I've seen other 3B flywheels that were flat, but no idea if they had been machined since new. From specs I've seen all the 275mm clutches used in 13bt, 2h, 12ht, 1hz, 2f (sure different spline counts depending on application) used a 0.5mm stepped flywheel. The smaller 260mm 3b clutch not sure.

Thanks for the info, Martin. When I did my clutch on my 3B a couple of years ago, I didn't bother machining it or anything, just bolted it back together and it worked just fine, lucky I guess.

I'll leave it to Scott to make the decision on what he wants to do once we have it apart. Should be fun!

UPDATE

Scott is looking to trailer the truck somewhere before Saturday.

Anyone willing or able to help him out? Scott has a replacement flywheel that he is getting machined this week, so we 'should' be done in a day.
Unfortunately, I don't have the space at my place or a trailer to tow him.
