Well after leaving the machine shop with detailed instructions on what to do... Replace the two missing dowels, resurface and step the flywheel 0.020" - I went in today to find a perfectly even flywheel now missing all of its dowels.

Does anyone have these measurements?
1. How far is the step from the side edge?
2. What is the length of the dowels?

The step is 1" from the edge. Lay a clutch disk on the flywheel to see for yourself. ;)

The dowels stick up 1/2" from the surface of the flywheel I have on hand. Measure from the bottom of the dowel hole to get overall length.

Good luck...and find another machine shop.

These are the step measurements on the F style flywheel and the 2F style flywheel...



F Flywheel uses the three-finger pressure plate. .630" step or 16.002mm


2f Flywheel uses the diaphragm style pressure plate. .020" step or .508mm

Sounds like those dumb asses owe you a new flywheel.
 
Why a new flywheel? The step is .020". I've seen that much ground off the face of a flywheel just to get it back to flat. Once the step is machined back into the OP's flywheel he will be fine to reinstall and go again.

Maybe. The step that Poser shows in his pic looks like a lot more than .02. If i was ground all the way off of my flywheel I'd want it replaced.

I don't think you need a new flywheel. Just get the step recut and put it together. Most clutches go well over 100K miles. If this is a typical fun/hobby truck then likely you will be dead or the truck rusted to nothing before you have to get in there and resurface the flywheel for another clutch.

Ige is right, you have to find a proper shop to work on stepped flywheels. The biggest problem with over machining a flywheel is just like a brake rotor. They only have so much material. If a flywheel is cut down too far, they are weaker, but you also begin to decrease the clearance between the clutch disc and the flywheel bolts, evetually the disc springs or rubber cushions between the disc hub and outer disc can contact the flywheel bolts.

The way the 2F flywheel is setup, I believe you can only turn the inner surface so many times before you are out of spec. With the dowels in it the outer step is not turned like the actual wear surface. The diaphram clutch will take up some slack to a certian point. On a 1f flywheel you cut both surfaces, but a 1F does not have dowels in the way, and the 3 finger clutch relies on that distance to remain the same in order to adjust it properly.

So the thickness needs to be rechecked and make sure the step can be recut and it is all in spec. Road wear on the face is different than machining. Otherwise, these guys owe you the money to pick up another flywheel. I think all you can get is a good used one at this point.
