This is from a buddy and he hasn't gotten much info on it yet, so I thought I'd throw it up here real quick and see if anybody knows anything...

I've been doing some basic maintenance on my Cruiser lately. ('77 40, completly stock drivetrain) Partly because it was about due and partly to be sure it was in good shape to drive the two hours to our club run this weekend. So last night I was going to just change the oil in the transmission because I had some clutch sticking problems this spring and figured my syncros probably shed some material and it would be good to get that out of there.

The tranny fluid looked fine and I had enough new left over so I decide I'd just do the t-case while I was at it. I pulled the plug on the tcase and it looked like silver paint flowing out of there. Tons of metal in it. I don't know if it was steel or aluminum, the magnet in the drain plug had some flakes on it but not like it seems it would if all that material in the oil were steel. I didn't think last night to put a magnet in the drain pan and see if it stuck or not, but I didn't drain the drain pan either so I could look at it today in the daylight.
That oil has been in there for a little under two years and about 7k miles. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't look like that.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? What would be wearing that much? I'm worried that my tcase may be on it's death bed. There has seemed to be more drivetrain whine lately.
My biggest question is do you think I should drive it down to the run tomorrow or stay home and start looking for a new case? Is this some sign of eminent failure or nothing to worry about.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I think there's a gear rubbing the case. Maybe a missing spacer.

Try pulling the lower inspection cover and see whats going on in there the spacer missing sound like a good guess to me. you would have more problems if the gears were that worn.
