Aloha guys, just picked up an '89 BJ74 LX Turbo Diesel to add to my collection, and this is my first Diesel ever. Question about the oil.
The previous owner was putting Rotella 5W 40, my gut tells me that I should switch it over to 15w 40.
It's got 140,000 miles, and it seems like a lot of guys are doing the 15w 40.
Was just curious about any extra info I should know about changing oil types in a diesel, if it's a good or bad idea. It runs pretty darn good right now.
I live in Hawaii, so cold temps is not an issue...

Thanks

15w40 is what I would run....good all around weight. SOme of the newer vehicles are using 5w but not thinking that is the case for 25 year old Cruiser.

I like Valvoline Premium Blue 15-40. I run it my BJ74 and in my Dodge Cummins.

Sweet, thanks guys, I'm gonna switch it out this weekend. The rig was imported from Vancouver BC, so maybe they were running the 5w40 due to the colder weather...

Aloha!

5w40 is a common cold weather thing. I can't imagine its necessary in your climate. Hell, I run 15w40 down to 0F here in Illinois.
Hi I'm from IL too, and fresh to diesel land cruisers and ih8mud. I'm starting to gather information regarding winter prep for my turbo diesel (2LTE) LJ78 and was hoping you could steer me in the right direction. I'd like to know more about fuel additives (if needed) , oil, tires, rust prevention, and local shops. Looking forward to hearing back :)
