can this pulling of lights etc still be done easily with the ARB bull bar on?

Yup, I currently have my bullbar installed and it presented no additional challenges. In fact it's easier I think 'cause it gives you a nice flat surface to rest the parts on while in progress.

OK, had a look. I could pull the front turn signal easily enough. The side marker light has one screw I think up on top that I see but nothing else obvious. What else need I do to remove that one or access the socket? Didn't see anything in the FSM either.

Did I understand this right, that the actual socket interchange without any modification, and that you don't have to do any rewiring or cutting or lengthening of wires?

OK, got it all out. Very straightforward except for the side marker housing which should be pulled out straight towards the front, not sideways as one might be tempted to do. And yes, looks like my wires too are long enough and all.

Unfortunately, it does look like some grease monkey pryed the side light out with a screwdriver and gouged the paint in the process. On with some painting now...

and for the record, seems like credit for this mod should go way back before this current thread... Chad maybe?

No doubt in my mind. This is much better. What the heck were they thinking? I'm dumbfounded. Always assumed the big side thing *was* the turn signal! Goes to show you I don't let others drive my truck...

Highly recommended mod! Enhances safety, the price is right and doesn't take more than 15 mins or so.

e9999 uses the squating-monkey style. outside of flinging poo...it's pretty useless...

:D

well, not to prolong the sad non-tech posts here, but who is currently polling folks about the prettiest pink portapotty enclosure for camping out ? :D

What if you have an LX450 or otherwise clear side-marker lenses, does the law require orange/yellow turn signals?? If so I suppose a colored bulb is required.

Anyone know?

AFAIK, an orange light must be emitted for marker/turning signals. Whether that is due to the bulb or the lense being orange, is irrelevant IMO. I've seen both in OEM applications, so I'd assume it's fine as long as it lights up orange.

I just did this today while changing out my PS return hose, again, and upgrading my lights with slee's harness.

Simple, and a great mod!

I just did this and all i can say is WOW!

What a very simple and functional mod!

I got some clear JDM markers and threw an amber bulb in them and now i have very visible turn signals!

Thanks for the post! Cool stuff!

I think it might be a little too bling for my taste, but i will hope it grows on me

Thank You!
This has been buging me!

Did mine last week. The first night I drove it, I wasn't even thinking about it, the turn signal was so bright on the side of the road. Very noticable.

Probably the best "bang for buck" mod. Safety factor goes way up too. It's a double winner.

One day, when all other mods are "done" I'll put in some 1157 sockets and move the original turn signals back up front. That technique is very elegant.

Notice that switching the wiring results in vehicles on cross streets opposite your turning direction not being able to see the turn signal when you are up at the intersection.

People on cross streets waiting to turn out into your travel direction may get pissed when they find out your are turning instead of going through the intersection.

Unless you have turn signals in your front bumper, I don't think this is an acceptable approach to get side indicators.

If you got the ARB, you get both!

Also, a friend of mine brought up that this mod eliminates the DOT required side running light. I need to look into this further!

Good point -- it's probably best for those with ARBs or other bumpers that might have front signal lights.

I'm also curious how much heat the front signal light lenses can take -- if these bulbs/wires are switched out, that lens will be getting much more heat than it did in the past.

Personally, I like the mod that CDan did...but this one's a quick-n-dirty solution -- with some minor draw-backs.

Poll? Where do you see me setting up a poll about enclosures?
What? You don't want to take a shower when on multiple trips?

If your :princess:es go with you on a trip without that trailer -- what're you gonna go? point them to the nearest bush to squat behind? Nice. Real nice

Methinks you need to stop messing with me and start working on improving your squatting-monkey search technique.

well, it's true that people on the other side may not see your modded turn signal, but with the OEM way, people on the side you want to turn into aren't seeing much of it. Isn't it more important that these guys see it since they're the ones more likely to hit you?

People at cross intersections can see both front turn signals. That bit had been figured out a long time ago.

Doug, I think they'll do ok with the heat. When I switched to clear corners I switched the bulbs to brighter wattage clears and wondered if constantly running them would yellow the lenses. Well I can run them for almost a day at a time on roadtrips and no overheating, no yellowing (After many years now). I know they are larger lense cases, but I think even the smaller signal will be ok. 'Sides think of all the windage they'll be receiving to cool them off.

Having said that, I'm curious after revisiting this mod idea .. and I may swap things.

I did this mod a long time ago that's why I blacked out my original turn signals just use the corner markers
My thought exactly. Custom bumper ideas have me thinking that the valance lights need to disappear. If the sockets interchange, I may just sand the letters off of the valance lenses and paint them green. Will ckeck this out.
