SWB 45 Build for Expedition

Well, after 3000+ miles I am finally home-----good way to brake in a "new" truck. Photos will come once I find the energy to upload them---got home parked the truck, left it loaded and found an inviting beverage.... Only two real issues during the trip. Had a brand new Alternator/vacuum pump fail as I was arriving in Herber UT. Local shop ordered me a replacement---which was the wrong one--so we played---lets open boxes of the 150 + alternators they had on the shelf. Found one that had the same mounting and plug but no vacuum pump drive---so I did the entire trip without power breaks---luxury item anyway. Then about halfway through had a rear SOR shock mount bolt break. Otherwise with the truck fully loaded was getting 24+ miles per gallon and as the truck got lighter the better the fuel mileage got. And I really like the gearing choice for this truck---cruises along all day at 75MPH no problem. Hopefully photos in the next day or so.

That's great - very respectable fuel economy. I love the 3:73s on Cruiser too. Can't wait to see the photos when you unwind. I think that will be my next drive train.

Peter you also have to remember the specs for the build. I am running an NV4500 with overdrive gear of 0.73, plus 3.73 differentials and Marks Australian gears in the transfer case that give me an additional 8% overdrive. With the final ingredient of the fuel efficient Cummins B3.3. Looking through my mileage my best for the trip was right around 28 MPG--and that is with a lot of gear/stuff in the rear of the truck. I am looking forward to seeing how the truck does when its not longer squatting in the rear.

That would be one heck of a tough choice. Patches is incredibly awesome, but so is the baby blue 45swb with the 3.3

Those pictures sure make me want to load up one of the trucks and hit the road. It's toad trip season!!!! Stupid job. I like that top for the back, and I especially like that extension for sleeping. That is incredibly cool. Any other pictures of the trip?

It was a real pleasure being on the Carbon Neutral Expedition and the Overland Expo with you. Hopefully we can do it again next year.


Having witnessed how this 45 performs, I will say that it does exceptionally well on road as well as off road. The B3.3 is a great little engine and Scott tested it thoroughly. Scott put a lot of time and effort into this build and the outcome is incredible. Job well done.

Scott...funny how we broke the same stuff. Toyota thing. I'd love to do some more runs someday. I'd like to make it out for the 45 run but I will just have to see how this summer pans out.

I met up with Alex in Scottsdale on Sunday night. We ended up staying at his 'friends' house. Funny...I never met her but crashed on her couch. We had a long ride home and we did not get back to my place until late Monday night. 19+ hours of driving. I bet you made it back to Oregon before we made it to Colorado.

Andre Thanks for the kind words---although I would still consider the truck a work in progress. Then again are they ever really finished. I know one thing is for sure---once I get a little more strength back in my right hand where I can wrestle some seats different seats will be going in. I still cannot feel my right cheek!! Plus I still have the items on the "to do" list that I created when I began this project. Going to give the truck a little love tomorrow including taking a leaf blower and removing the many pounds of UT that coat everything, install another new alternator with vacuum pump so I have power breaks again and just go over the mechanicals since the trip. This truck is definitely going to have many more adventures with its new start on life.

Weight of Truck

Had a few people email me requesting what I thought the truck currently weighed---had a chance to take it to a local truck scale and with 12 gallons of fuel on board the truck currently weighs:

4700 LBS

So I am guessing at the begging of the expedition I was probably over 6000 LBS with 68 gallons of fuel, 15 gallons of water, ARB fridge, second cooler, spare parts, tools, fluids.......

In Germany the max. weight for a FJ45 LPB is
3035 kg = 6691 LBS

what are you running for rear springs? i have a set of 4" Alcan rear springs that were fine until I loaded my truck down in the back with an extra 1000 lb's of bumper tire and stuff. so while they still worked fine they sagged a bit . so I ordered a new set of Alcans adjusted for the weight. i woujld sell them for $250 plus shipping if you are interested. the swb and the lv share the same rear spring set up I belive

what are you running for rear springs?

I am running OME front and rear with the rear having one leaf removed so my teeth don't rattle out so fast. So if things seem to sag I can always put the leaf back in. But currently everything sitting great right now.

I saw someone post that this used to be my truck. I will have to say that you have done so much good work to this truck....it is nowhere close to the good looking relick I used to have. You have truly done an incredible job. I have an lv in paint stage that I would love to save up enough to have you finish it with b3.3, power steering etc. Well done.
