Swap IFS to solid axle on '89 4Runner

Typically your Birfs will blow before you will grenade either front diff, and the FJ40 birfs aren't any stronger.

The mini front axle has a little bit more ground clearance.

But they are getting harder to find, and aren't cheap when you do, at least in New England.

By using a mini truck front axle you can use off the shelf steering components and spring hangers and the width will be correct (or at least closer than a 40 axle). As mentioned, the ring and pinion are not the weak link in these axles, and if you run a high pinion third member in the front even with the smaller ring gear it will still be as strong or stronger than the 40 ring gear due to the design.

Aslo 40 Series Axles Are A Bit Smaller Then The Minis From Perch To Perch, Thus If You Put A Mini On A 40 You Have To Out-Board The Spings. And One More The Rear Mini Truck Axles Have No C-clips Like The 40, 80, Or The Junk Jeeps.....

Front Mini Has 31 Spline Birfs, Instead Of The 8 On The 40....

I Like Mini, If You Cant Tell....

Actually, there is a C-clip in the mini-truck rear axle. It is out behind the wheel bearing, not inside the diff.

Yes There Is, But Its More Of A Snap Ring, Or Sir Clip, Because You Have To Drive The Axle Out, To Get It Out....

The Thing Im Getting At Is If You Brake An Axle In The 40 Series Your Pretty Much Screwd Unless You Or Someone Else Has A Spare.

On Mini If You Brake It You Better Have A Locker, Spool, Or Welded Rear End. So You Can Cut Of What Else Is Broken, Put The Axle Back In Tighten The Four Bolts, And Your Good To go Again, Or Atleast You Can Make It Off The Trail......

I Just Dont Like The Thought Of C-clips In The Third Member, Just My opinions Not Yours, So Go Ahed and Bash All You Want... This Will Still Be My Answer, And I stand By It....

So Just My 2Cents, If Im Wrong Let Me Know And There For I Will Be That More Intelligent About The Subject

Have Fun With The Build, If You Do Ever Build It....

They are a little narrower.
An FJ60 axle is the same width as the IFS mini rear housing IIRC

Why outboard the springs?
Why not move teh spring perches?

'Cruiser FRONT axles have no c-clips.
Never have, never will.

Disc brake birfields are all 30 splines on the lockout side, 27 on the inner side.
Drum brake birfields are 6 spline.

As far as the REAR ends go, Mini rear housings kick ass, other than that the housings are PAPER thin...

First Off The Front Mini Perch Is Wight Next To The Third Member, Hell You Have To Take Off A U-Bolt To Get The Fron Third Member Off....
And On The Rear If You Move The Perches Out More Then It Develops A Problem With You E-Brake.....

Crusier Front, Ya I Know They dont Have C-Clips I Was Talking About Rear....

And On Mini Housings Ya There Thin, But Thats Why We Have Steel, Its Called Gussets.... And The Mini Is Rear Is Still Used In The Tocoma And The New FJ Today.

But Once Again Where Not Talking About Puting Mini Axles On 40, We Are Talking about Mini Truck With 40 Axles....

Just Minio Is Nicer In All These Ways, Plus Perches Are On There All Ready.....

So End Of My Disscusion... I'd Go Mini All The Way... Goodbye And Good Night

EDIT AND POST....

Aslo 40 Series Axles Are A Bit Smaller Then The Minis From Perch To Perch, Thus If You Put A Mini On A 40 You Have To Out-Board The Spings.

REASON FOR EDIT: Sorry I WasThinking About Mini Axle On 40

And One More The Rear Mini Truck Axles Have No C-clips Like The 40, 80, Or The Junk Jeeps.....

REASON FOR EDIT: Notice I Said Rear Not Front Tiger, I Have No Idea Where You Got Front From, Do You?

Technically, yes they do. There are 6 of them, 3 on each side. One at the end of each Birfield, inside the locking hub, and one on each side of the cage of the Birfield.

But you are correct that they don't have them inside the diff. Neither do the mini-trucks, they are identical in the guts.

I don't think they are any thinner than the 40 axles. The rear diff cover is too thin on both, but fortunately there are fixes for this now, such as the pipe caps I have welded on my axles.

There's no use even talking about using a rear Cruiser axle in the back of a mini-truck, the diff is off-center and won't work, unless you are using a different transfer case.

True, the Cruisers have C-clips in the diffs, which I also don't like, but they have the feature that you can pull the axles and diff without having to pull the brake lines. I fixed this on mine by installing rear discs.

Personally I wouldn't bother.

I'd rather just put in a 35 or 40 spline Ford 9" rear end with a toyota pattern flange and call it good.

While it's unlikely (though possible) to break a 35 spline shaft, the beauty of the mini/Cruiser hybrid is parts. The only custom part is the housing. As 'Nutley said in the other thread,

"strongest toyota rear made from stock parts obtainable in the US. You also get to keep your locker and gears from your old axle. Not you mention have the same carrier front and rear. Minis have better drum brakes than fj40s.

Very cost effective"

It If You CAn Find One... Its In One Of The 40's When They Had the Centerd Rear Axle, And Just Cut Off The Outer Housing, Free The Axle... Weld On Minis..... Im Sure You Could Do This To And 80 Series To If They Are Centerd... That Way You Have A Nice Thick/ Strong Housing with The Mini Hybird Axle Setup...Just A Suggestion
