What's it been... 3 weeks straight at -30C?

This morning the sign across from our office says it is -38C. Mr. G fired right up this morning.... thanks to his fixed block heater cord and new pump!

Jims pipes froze, Mine were starting to before christmas, glad I put the heater into the wall before I left.

What's the word on the Pine Beetles? Is this going to do them in?

I heard they need a week of -40C at this time of year, since they are deep in the tree in the dead of winter. But in the spring or fall, when the beetles are closer to the edge of the tree, lees cold is needed.

I don't think they live in the tree, just under the bark. I cut a lot of beetle killed tree's for firewood, standing dead = burn immediately, and you can see the tracks they make just under the bark. The rest of the tree is always rock solid. Not a bioligist, just what I've observed.

It's due to a fungus (the aptly named "blue stain fungus") that is carried from tree to tree via the pine beetle:

It's a similar scenario to Dutch elm disease.

It's soposed to be +10 on sunday, hows that for a 40 degree turnaround, I guess its a good time to wash these long johns and wool socks making me itchy,
