Super Secret cupholder

So.....has anyone noticed this nifty cup holder built into the upper tray of the center console? I just noticed it today, and kind of feel like I've discovered the New World.
Is this Toyota's tongue in cheek response to the massive failure of the lack of cup holders in the 80 Series?

Yeah.
That's the superannoyingsecret cup holder that I never use but is always in the way when I open my center console.

Why would you even need those really? That means within a 3 foot radius there are 6 cup holders. The 2 in the slide out tray in the rear of the console, in the upper tray of the console, and the 2 in front of the center console.

Worst cup holders ever. Try grabbing a hot coffee out of that with your right hand while sitting in the drivers seat. Good luck unless you are double jointed. Plus, I think that cup holder is causing the supersecret rattle coming from my center console.

^^^ Yep. That's one of my biggest complaints about the 100, too much plastic pieces that are snapped or screwed together that once they start to wear contribute to a lot of little rattles and creaks. I have taken the dash and console apart a couple times now to try to get rid of noises.

I would rather not have these cup holders due to the unuseability mentioned above and the inevitable source of rattles.

Those are the cupholders where you store your kiddie's drinks after coming through the drive-through... cuz you know if you put their drinks within arms reach, they will finish them before eating any of their food.

I ripped that odd contraption out on day one of ownership. Added no value to our family. I enjoy the little bit of extra space tho.

You made me run out and look at mine. I don't have that. In mine I lift the lid, and there's a shallow storage area. I lift that, and there's a 2-cup-holder insert (with coin slots) above the big storage area. I have to remove the insert to access the storage below.

I removed mine as well..... the "clip" that was supposed to hold them in place broke off, so EVERY time I lifted the lid to access the storage space, I got cupholders instead!!!

Good riddance, I say.

Funny, I found those about 2 1/2 years after buying the thing!!! Never used since! Too awkward!

I had to check, even though I was extremely thorough when cleaning my rig when I bought it. Don't have it and it doesn't look like there was ever one there in my 99.

I don't like those cupholders - they prevent me from installing the Wits End organizer. Although @NLXTACY is trying to figure out a workaround.

Interesting, mine definitely never had it, it doesn't have the mounting points (like if the PO removed it). Do you have a removable tray underneath that, with 2 cup holders in it?
