So on a 1992 4x4 you drain and fill the gear oil of the transfer case. No biggie. Is the gear oil in the transfer case shared with the manual gear box? If so, how does one drain and fill on a 2x4 truck without a transfer case? I dug around for another set of plugs and I'm not coming up with anything under there.

Just wondering if I'm missing a maintenance item here. -thanks

im pretty sure they are independent of one another.

just checked the fsm for my '88 4runner. it shows two different capacities for the transfer case and the transmission for all available transmissions in there. ( G series, W series and R151....mine is w56). dont know about your model but the fill plug is in a stupid location on the side of the transmisison for me

but i usually just fill the transmission through the top, where the shifter bolts in. its much easier than tryin to screw with a bottle and a hose underneath the truck sideways.

keep lookin' i bet you'll find it

T-case(s) have their own filling cap separate from the transmission.
Usually the tranny filler port is on the side of the transmission, above its equator. I think the t-case one is on the passenger's side.

That's a great idea. I always had trouble filling from the side.

Yes, they are separate. Separate drain and fill plugs on a 4WD tranny/transfer.

You can fill the tranny via the shifter hole, but you can't fill the transfer that way if it's a forward shift configuration.

hand pump

This would help in filling up.

When looking for the 5 gallon pail pumps, look at the capacity per stroke. I'm seeing allot of the cheaper ones being only 1oz per stroke. All of the ones I have are at least 4oz per stroke.
