steering column u joint

My OEM Telescopic Steering Column need new dust cover, so before I hammer the pin really hard, just wanted to hear if im going to ruin it ? I assume it meant to come out.

the pin will push out, press would be a smoother operation than a hammer
1981+ US spec rigs had 2 piece columns, that is the lower section designed to compress in an accident
there are 2 different lengths of lower shaft depending on if it came with factory PS or not

If you use a hammer it may mushroom if it is softer then the hammer and you will have to cut off and drill out. Pressing out would work better.

Do you have a vise? You could press the pin out with that.

 

[Living in the Past]

I have both a brass hammer and brass punches I use those when a press is not readily available. Softer metal will be damaged before mushrooming the pin.
