Starter...Maybe?

Mine was beginning to do that too (after 28 yrs). Occasionally hesitating (dead) when the key was turned.
I replaced it with a 'new' Toyota re-manufactured starter. It works perfectly now.

Often it is the solenoid inside the starter that begins to fail.... so I've heard. The starters can be repaired if you want to get involved with it. Some guys have done it, but you'll still end up with a rusting starter in the end if you do the fix on your own... for about half the price of a reman...
Also, there may be other issues lurking around the corner that were not addressed.

A new OEM remanufactured starter is not too expensive. Maybe around $120 or so if you shop around.

beno is great for toyota stuff, I used a denso which is often factory toyota equipment, I don't know if it was on their starters but it is atleast something you can get at a parts store. I don't remember the price, pretty sure it was less than $100
 
I re-built the remanufactured starter in mine (new plunger & contacts). It was super easy and only added an extra five minutes to the job. Mine was in good shape otherwise.

That, however, is blingin'! I would have expected it to cost more than that too.
 
OS, I noticed that on this link it says that that remanufactured part #Toyota Starter Motor 28100-60070-84 STARTER,REMAN G/R is for 6/82 to 8/87.

The G/R must refer to Gear Reduction.

When I did a search on that ToyotaPartsDeal website for my 12/81 FJ60, it gave me this part: Toyota Starter Motor 28100-60090-84 STARTER (12V 1KW),REMAN CONV (replacing 28100-60042) for US$221.22

I wonder if the REMAN CONV refers to the fact that they must do some sort of additional work to convert earlier than 6/82 starter so that it will work. For the life of me I can't image what it would be. I don't think it is gear reduction because I've always had gear reduction starters (uh, apparently I don't and never have....@&^%$&!!!), so I'm thinking it might be electrical...Any ideas?

EDIT: Man-a-Fre has the 28100-60090-84 PN listed as a Direct Drive starter...not a Gear Reduction

OK, I think I understand what's going on.

The starter on the left in the image below is the Direct Drive starter (PN 28100-60042 which is superseded by PN 28100-60090-84) for the (8008-8206)2F.

The starter on the right is the Gear Reduction starter (PN 28100-60070-84) for the for the (8206-8708)2F.

The guys in the 40 & 45 section are upgrading from the old Direct Drive starters to the later FJ60 Gear Reduction starters (see links in post below).

Given that my 12/1981 starter is Direct Drive starter, I believe it would be an upgrade (and save me alot of stress on cold winter start-ups) to switch to the Gear Reduction starter...but haven't run across any posts on early model FJ60s doing this...just the 4X guys...

I have no idea what the label "CONV" means or what they are doing to the remanufactured starter for the 81 FJ60.

28100-60042 is the PN for a new starter for the 12/81 FJ60.
Apparently that starter is no longer available new.

Apparently 28100-60042 has been replaced by: 28100-60090-84 (a remanufactured starter) and that is the part to order.

If you placed an order for 28100-60042 at any Toyota dealer, that part number will have a reference that it has been replaced by 28100-60090-84.

I'll bet it's the correct starter and PN. It is all over the web.

As I understand it, "Remanufactured" is not the same as "Rebuilt". A reman supposedly is as good as new, with newly plated metal and new parts. A rebuilt unit does not have to adhere and follow the same quality standards.

So, just a follow up with information that may or may not be helpful to the OP, but I was able to upgrade from the old direct drive starter (PN 28100-60042) to the newer gear reduction starter (PN 28100-60070) and it fits and works on my 12/1981 2F FJ60 USA model.

I'm trying to figure out if the PN 28100-60070 Starter for the (8206-8708)2F will fit/replace the PN 28100-60042 Starter for the (8008-8206)2F and if so, that it will be an upgrade (improvement on performance).
It seems to be an upgrade in performance, but I won't know until the middle of the next winter in sub-zero degree weather. The old direct drive starter had real problems and put a lot of strain on the battery on very cold starts...the trick was keeping the engine (carb/ignition) in exemplary working order so that it would catch on the first revolution...

If I don't see improvement with the newer gear reduction starter on very cold starts, then I'll look into adding in a relay, so that the ignition switch is dedicated to switching the relay (not the solenoid directly) and the solenoid would draw it's 12V+ power from directly from the battery when the relay is switched on instead of through the ignition switch.
 
yeah a few of the 40/55 guys are upgrading to the later model GR fj60 starters. They had this link from amazon but i don't think it is actually a denso model but those 40 guys swear by it .

I have an 82 fj60 that has the 60042 starter that is on its way out and it is time to upgrade to 60070
Looks kinda like the one I went with...got it at a local aftermarket auto parts store.

I would have gone with the Denso rebuild that OS posted up, but my 60042 direct drive starter was a waranteed aftermarket one, so the local store credited me that towards the price of the 60070...

The only real drawback to the reduction drive starter that I can think of is that you can't use it to move the car in an emergency. I had a fuel pump fail on me out west once and was able to 'drive' the vehicle to safety off the direct drive starter and manual transmission...

What I really need to do this summer is replace the wire in the wire harness that runs from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. I know guys are adding in relays on that circuit, but I'd rather try a new wire...but it is a lot of work...so I'm still calculating the trade-off...
 
I installed the 60070 to replace the 60042 on my 82 fj60 and I can't even tell you how much better it is! Granted, my old 60042 was beat up and on it s way out, but the new one just started my rig right up with what felt like twice the power. I did not buy the amazon bosch version but a reman toyota. They look identical and am pretty sure it would work equally as well, i think.

The only small issue i had was fitting the small wire with the connecter to the new unit. The wire itself is housed in a plastic rectangle cap thing that is a few mm too tall. I was being lazy and ended up just snipping the plastic housing and it fit right in.

Old thread I know, but why can't you move the car on the GR starter? If it has more torque than the direct drive it should be even easier for the starter to move the car?
