Geez, couldn't you have ordered it from the US and had it shipped for less, or just rebuilt what you got? IIRC a Toyota reman'd starter runs around $265 US dollars. FWIW, I'm in the middle of rebuilding a Denso starter; contacts, plunger, and new bearings (brushes are still good). All together I'll have under $100 and my time into it.

I probably could have, but I'm over the whole thing now and don't feel like pulling it back out of the truck if it's no good after reco.

Right. So I received my genuine Denso/Toyota starter a couple of days ago and I'm now a pro starter installer. It took me about 30 minutes to pop the old one out and have it replaced.

It sounds and feels FANTASTIC! They really are a quality unit. The wreckers gave me $50 for the old one, I think it only needed 4x new brushes.. but anyhow, It's good for another 10+ years now. Whatever you do. Never, EVER buy an aftermarket starter for your 80 series. They're horrible..

The sound they make when starting is loud, obnoxious and nothing like the clean smooth sound of the Denso. Plus, they'll grind your flywheel right off given time.
