Started to bring my 74 FJ40 back to life.

I take it you cut into the stock shock mount? WOuld it be best to remove the shock mount and redo with an ford one? I'm just asking all these questions now, i'm a ways off but getting closer.
I guess i need to have the motor in place and radiator mounted at least before I get the box in place..

Slip joint? What did you use to connect to the column. I have at least one 60 series complete slip joint in the garage. Just curious..

I did cut out the back side of the shock mount and it would be easier to do the ford shock mounts but I was in a hurry.

The steering shaft is a cross breed of the stock manual column and a 60. I cut the 60 column off where just above the support bearing and cut the 40 column off so that I can weld in the support bearing and the shaft will be in the stock location. Then I did the same for the steering shaft in the column. Welded it all up and it looks stock and with 2 bearings it is very smooth. From the firewall to the box I used the 60 slip joint and cut one u joint off and welded in a piece od 1" square tubing and put the u joint on the end of the tubing. I will probably get a nice shaft later but it works good for now. I will take pictures tonight of it and post it up.

I went with a 2F and a H42,toybox and early solid case with lower gears.


Where did you source the H42 compatable Toybox? Marlin Crawler didn't have much tech support - as their "Land Cruiser" guy wasn't in today. I'm trying to do this exact set-up...but have had no luck sourcing a H42 compatable toybox with the older solid t-case.

Let me know how it went - interested in that side of your build-up.

Impressive work you've done....quite a lot accomplished!

I actually got ahold of Adeberry (sp) at Marlin - and he no longer sells the MC21 unit....they went with the finer-splined output shaft that works with the split-case only. (19 or 21 spline) It'll work with an H41,H42,H55 -just specify which one he said. For what it's worth, the part number is: MC-H42-SC470 It'll run about $1900 for the unit!!!

You've scored a pretty sweet deal on your ToyBox....pretty rare part from what he said!

I got the tranny, toybox and tcase from a mud member. It was all together and I just had to bolt it to the motor. I will agree it was a great deal.

Its been a while since I have posted anything about my 40 so I figured I would update this tread some. I have taken it to a couple of events now and it still does great. Last years GSMTR I layed it on its side and just having a baby i started thinking I really need a real cage instead of the so called factory roll bar. So I ordered up a full family cage from Metal tech on cyber monday. It arrived in va in less than a week. I welded it all up over christmas break and I was very surprised how easy it went together and the quality is top notch.

I also put a nose guard on too. Since I dont drive it very much so I usually take it out in the yard to stretch its legs. My oldest nephew likes driving it around the yard so I have a couple of hill climbs and a couple of deep ditches and this little rock pile that they play on. Starting next month I am going to put in a arb in the front and redo the front shock mounts with the ford towers. I also need to upgrade the alternator.

I also rebuilt my gauge cluster. The pics isn't my cluster but mine is identical to it but with a white face. I built this one for bkfj40

I had been chasing a oil leak and I just pulled the oil pan and I noticed a small dent in the pan skid. I though that I might have pulled a spot weld loose. but I cant see anything in the bottom of the pan. So I drilled out all of the spot welds and found the usual gunk between them. but everything looked ok. so I went to prep the pan to weld back up and was hammering the small dent back out and the hammer went thru the pan. Found my leak. So I ordered up a new pan From BENO and it should be here next week. I will post pics tomorrow.

I had a hard time finding some one to make a drive shaft. I had a shop quote me $500 and it would take them 3-4 weeks to do the work. So i got a receiver tube and some 2" thick wall tubing and made my own. It works great and is super strong.

The holes are from me drilling out the spot welds on the skid plate. and nope It dont have amsoil yet. I wanted to get my small oil leak fixed lol
