Trail Ride season is upon us! It’s time to head down to Idaho and hit the dunes. This is a great place to get out early in the season and dust off the wheeling skills while we wait for the mud to dry out in the mountains.
The plan for this one is fairly open, I’m planning to head down Friday after work, and camp at the dunes. Anyone is welcome to join Friday night for camping. If you prefer to head down Saturday morning as well, that is also an option. We’ll plan to have everyone meet up at the campsite, ready to roll out at 10am Saturday morning (4/25). From there, we’ll work our way through the dunes. The terrain is constantly shifting with the winds, so we’ll pick our route as we go. We’ll likely try to circle back to our starting location, and folks can head home from there, or stay and camp Saturday night.
Come prepared for a day of wheeling, and to camp if that is your preference. There’s a decent chance of getting stuck in the sand, so ensure your vehicle has adequate front and rear recovery points. Bring appropriate recovery gear, and a shovel. Additionally, tire pressure goes a long way in the sand, so bring a compressor. Please review the clubs vehicle requirements checklist and make sure you’re compliant.
To drive in this area, the BLM requires sand flags on all vehicles. The club owns flags, and will have some available on a first come first serve basis. Plan to be able to mount a flag to a bumper, roof rack or other solid location. The higher you can mount it, the better. Vehicles not displaying a flag will not be able to join the trip.
We’ll be using GMRS radios for communication, tuned to Ch. 15. Please bring a radio, or make arrangements to borrow a handheld unit.
Camp:
We’ll plan to camp / meet up near this pin. We’ve camped in this location before, but if conditions have changed, we may move slightly to accommodate. Look for my Tacoma with an orange GFC. When you turn off of Red Road, the sand begins immediately, so I’d suggesting airing down right off the pavement.
