My FJ40 isa 2008 5.3 Vortec with a 4l60e tranny mated to a stock Toyota transfer case with an Advanced Adapter.

My toyota speedo is shot, and since I am already running Autometer gauges (volts, battery, oil, and fuel), I figured I might as well upgrade to an Autometer tach and speedo.

Since I am going from a mechanical speedo, to an analog, I (from my research) will need to get the input signal from the Chevy VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

I have very little info from the PO, about the conversion, so I am a little lost. Some of my research states that the VSS might have been located on the Chevy transfer case, while other places state it is located on the ranny. Where would that sensor be? What wire should I be looking for?

I posted this question on another board, but its been crickets. I was hoping somebody here could point me in the right direction.

From the looks of it, I may be SOL.

Considering the price of a new Speedometer from Autometer, and the price it would cost to convert, it looks like I would be better off buying a GPS enabled speedometer.

I think that'll be the route I end up taking. It will be hard to say goodbye to my OEM cluster, but given the fact that I do not know how fast I am going, or how many miles I have been putting on my 40, I think it will be the best bet.

look for a USED cluster on mud?

you are looking for a sensor that has a two wire feed, most likely around the area of the tail shaft flange at the rear of the transfer case. Follow the wires.

Go here http://www.rockauto.com/, look up your your donor vehicle or vehicle with similar drive-line and key word speed sensor. You can see pictures there.

Sorry not much help... I would have to goegle it also. But that speedo you picked is pretty dang cool! Let us know how it works if you go that route.

I was able to find out what I need to do. My VSS is actually located on my advanced adapter off all places.

From talking to a rep at Painless, I found out that all I have to do it splice a new electrical gauge to the signal wire on the VSS. From additional research, I am reading that attaching directly to the VSS can cause a few issues and I should therefore attach the electrical speedo to somewhere on the PCM. The good news is that I wont have to buy an expensive GPS Speedo. Even a good programable autometer speedo is gonna cost at least $220, but that should be cheaper than buying a used speedo...I think.

I had to get a new fuel sending unit too, and now my existing Autometer Fuel gauge is messing up. Now I have to buy a new programmable gauge. There goes another $100. Anybody want to buy my old one?

I am looking at the Trail Candy instument panels. May even get a Tach too, as my car is already wired for one. Might look something like this:
