My speedo & odo do not work. No dummy lights or codes coming up. Read some threads and can't figure out where to start, already swapped the speedo sensor on the transmission. I thought I read that there is another part that goes with the sensor maybe I misunderstood. The wiring under the truck looks good, not sure where to look in the engine bay to check there. How hard is pulling the cluster? What else should I be checking? Also the truck has died a couple times while coming to a stop, starts right back up no issues, might they be related. The shop I use could not reproduce it or find anything. Thanks for all the input so far everyone my truck is coming along nicely except this stupid speedo issue.

Thanks,

Cory

Actually that is the sensor I changed already I mistakenly said transmission

If the sensor is pulsing the wiring goes straight to the cluster. Plug the to the instrument cluster and recheck for pulse. Basically you only have 3 parts VSS sensor, wiring and speedo.

Do I have to pull the cluster to check the pulse there?

Yes but not as hard as one my think.

One other possibility is the gear drive for the VSS. Remove the VSS but not the part that bolts to the tcase and turn your drive line and make sure you have mechanical drive to the VSS.

If you decide not to fix it you could buy a dash mounted speedo, they aren't too expensive or use a speedo app on smartphone.

In my 94 the number 1 sensor in the cluster went out causing my speedo, odometer, and cruise control to stop working. For some reason it didn't throw a code for several months, then I changed all my bulbs to less and the code started flashing. I ordered up a used cluster from Cruiseryard for $75 and replaced it and finally everything works. Only thing is I gained about 4000 miles. The new speedometer is pretty pricey from the dealer. I think they wanted $225. Eventually I'll replace it with a new one, I just needed it working asap so I could get my inspection done. That sucks you paid all that money to replace the #2 sensor and it didn't work. In the fsm there's a test to make sure it's working.

Yeah not too happy about buying parts that don't fix the problem seems to be par for the course lately. My other truck pulled similar crap with me recently. Is there a link for the fsm? I downloaded a couple want to make sure I have the best resources. Thanks everyone.

[QUOhamakua, post: 9205775, member: 42038"]I had the same problems, including low idle. Replaced the vss, no change. Bought a new speedo head from cruiserdan, all is good now.[/QUOTE]
The cluster or is that a different part on the transfer case?

Mine did this once going down the freeway...never could figure it out at off ramps / gas stations along the way. It finally just came back to life about 200 miles later, never an issue since in 3+ years and I hope it stays that way.

I realize how helpful this post was.

What year is the cruiser? Is your od off light working in the dash? The wiring is under the intake manifold above the starter. Check the ground. Its either on the back of the manifold by the brake booster or mine was by the transmission dip stick. With the key on engine not running check the voltage going into the #2 sensor. If everything looks good then its the #1 in the speedo. The plug may have come loose on the back of the cluster. Its easy to pull the cluster, you just need a phillips head screwdriver. Start under the steering wheel and work your way up. You'll have to unplug all the switches.

It's a 96 the o/d light is not on or flashing. It does what its supposed to when I hit the o/d off switch. Will check the ground wires. Thanks

Ever figure this one out? I'm fighting the same issue.

Purchased a '93 cruiser earlier this year and few months after the speedo started dancing and now its dead and so is the odometer. Tansmission seems fine, shift points seem good. No O/D light blinking, cruise seems to work fine. New VSS to no avail, gear looks new everything spins freely. Checked the ground which seems fine as long as I was looking at the correct one. Just not sure where/how to dive into checking the "wiring after the split" as its called. Where is the best place to access this bit of wiring and whats the best way to troubleshoot or checkout the guage cluster/plug. Does it all involve tearing out the dash instuments? First mod I did was CDL switch which was cake but it is still always unnerving popping apart 21 year plastic.

Thanks for any advice

Checked the VSS wiring plug on top of the passenger output of the transfer case? Corrosion or wiring issues might be discovered.

I found nothing wrong in the wiring or vss sensor. I ordered a replacement cluster from cruiseryard and just need to make time to put it in.

Ok, I now have the same issue but my O/D Off is flashing also. Was working fine yesterday but speedo dead today. Is mine the same or different as my O/D is flashing?

Turns out mine was the gear on the vss sub-assembly pulled the assembly replace shafft with new parts from Cdan all is well now.
