I noticed yesterday that my speedometer was not working - all other gauges are fine at the moment... any ideas?

Speed sensor go out maybe?

Does your cruise control work at freeway speeds?

I'll try that on the way to work tomorrow. Going back through the fuses again today just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Well s***, now the entire gauge cluster is dead.

I pulled the neg batt cable and let it sit for a while to do a system reset. I hooked the cable back up, put the key in and turned it to the first position; IIRC, the gauge needles do a sweep then return, this didn't happen. Instead, I heard a noise behind the gauge cluster that sounded like plastic gear grinding.

The system finished booting, I started the truck - all gauges DRT (Dead Right There). Lights work, nav/radio works, gear indicator works, door open idiot light works... just no gauges.

WTF?

BTW - New battery was put in about three months ago.

And another piece of new weirdness...

Since I've had the truck, I've only had to hit the "I Agree" button once no matter what positon the key was in when the truck was actually started. Now, if I don't start the truck with one turn, I have to "agree" a second time. And, on top of that, the "Toyota" lolg comes up on the screen.

This is driving me nuts...

You didn't put the d light bs in! Pull the Blake trim off from above the column and tighten the two black nut/screws

What?

Put the MadDog down and back away slowly...

I haven't pulled the dash yet to take a look.

More oddness this morning - chk engine, both VSC lights on, no trans selector indicators.

Going to hook up the scanguage up this afternoon and see if I have enough time to pull the gauge pack and check the connections.

Pulled a P0500 from OBD. Removed and cleaned the speed sensor this evening.

Goods news: other gauges working now, still not speedo
Bad news: looks like it'll cost $180 to replace the speed sensor

Did this fix the problem? Seems I have the same problems, though no stored codes.

I had speedo fail last night driving on the highway. Then CEL came on, the VSC TRAC and VSC OFF came on. No gear selector lights on the dash. Got home, turned the truck off, grabbed my ScanGuage. Back to truck. Plug in the ScanGuage, turn on the truck. No more CEL or VSC lights. No codes stored. Speedo still inop, and selector lights inop.

Is this a VSS issue? Looks like it sits at the rear end of the T-case just in front of the rear drive shaft. Is it pn 83181-12020 ?

OK. Driving and CEL comes back with P0500 code, and both the VSC lights on too.

Check the 15 amp gauge fuse (DS kick panel). If its blown your alternator will not charge the battery possibly stranding you at some point. Replace fuse, disconnect VSS, start engine, if fuse doesnt blow, VSS should be the issue. Replace VSS
