I checked the "Gauge 1" and "Guage 2" fuses on DS and PS kickpanel fuse boxes. These are fuses #39 and #63 in the owner's manual. Both were fine. Battery seems to be charging fine. Registers 12.5v and while running about 14v. All per my ScanGuage.

I have a VSS on the way to my local dealer and will pick it up in the morning and install.

New VSS picked up from local Toyota dealer, installed. No joy.

No speedo, CEL comes back with P0500, and VSC lights come back on.

WTF....

Pulled both the Speed Sensors on the trans. They measure 635 ohms roughly. On ac voltage I can get a reading when passing big metal objects in front of their magnets. They seem ok.

Next steps?

I had the same issue on my 2003 LX470 and had to send it off to Tanin Auto Electonix. Cost $485.00.

You have to send instrument cluster panel for the repairs, unless they have one in stock. Takes little over 2 weeks , unless you pay $200.00 extra for 2 day return.

Truck can still be driven. You have to watch your seed on school zones and make sure you have full tank of gas.

Very easy to remove and replace:

Thanks for the note 2003lx470 !!

What were your symptoms on your truck?

I ask because I get the impression my issue is upstream of the instrument cluster as there is no speed data from the ECU, as witnessed by zero info available on MPH when I plug in my ScanGuage or other OBDII reader and drive. MPH just reads zero. I would think if it were an issue at the cluster, I would see data coming from the ECU to the ScanGuage.

Does that make sense?

Much appreciated !

OK, looks like the signal goes from the VSS through the cluster to the ECM.

Looks like this is the next test....this is the connector to the back of the cluster....

Good news is, I found the problem. Bad news is, I had "checked" it before.

Short story is, it was the Gauge 2 fuse in the passenger side kickpanel. A 10A fuse. I had looked at it on Friday evening and didn't catch it. I looked at all the fuses again this evening, after all the other items I did were of no help.

I won't even tell you that.......I swapped both transmission VSS's with my wife's LX70, and swapped the gauge cluster for a few minutes to make sure that wasn't it. I even swapped the t-case VSS between the trucks, after having installed a brand new one in my truck yesterday. Hey, it's nice to have an extra cruiser on hand with known working components. ; )

Oh well, let's hope the fix is permanent. I did learn a ton about these systems and how to troubleshoot.

This is the most current thread on speedometer not working so I though I would ask my question here. My speedo does not register until the truck gets warm (180) and the tranny shows at least 115. The scangauge does not show any codes and will not register MPG, the cruise control also does not work. I checked the wiring on the VSS and cleaned that up and put dielectric grease on the connection. I was going to pull the VSS when I saw a couple of older threads that talked about them replacing it with no result under the same conditions. It does not seem like it would be a gauge fuse issue as it only happens when cold (50 and below). I currenlty use a GPS speedo app but want my wife to be able to drive it if need be.

Any input from the hive would be appreciated.

IIRC there is a wire you tap (that is near the ECU itself) to get "speed" information for aftermarket stereos. I'm certain I put a "top tip" post in the sticky at the top (the one about what you've done this week to your rig) that identifies the wire.

I don't remember if that wire is the equivalent of the VSS signal (or the signal itself), but it may be worth a shot to find the post and tap that wire to a voltmeter and monitor it when you first start the rig. I suggest that wire since it isn't too difficult to access (ECU is behind the glovebox, 5 mins of work to get to it).

Just keeping this thread updated.....A couple of days ago when pulling out of the gas station I noticed that the dash indicated that I was in Reverse, and the R light was blinking....I turned off the turn signal and the blinking R stopped but the R was still on...curious. I also realized that the speedometer was dead. After doing some research here I found this thread which was super helpful. I have on order a new Neutral Safety Switch and the VSS sensor in the transfer case as the P 0500 and P 0705 codes pointed me their direction. While waiting for their arrival I checked fuse #39 in the DS panel (it was fine) and fuse #63 in the PS panel (blown). I replaced the fuse, reset/cleared the codes and went for a drive. All is well with the old girl!!

I'll likely replace the two sensors once the new one's arrive (cuz 20+ years old) and save the old one's just in case.....This was the first Check Engine Light in the two + years of ownership.
