Speedometer died...What to do now

My speedometer died this afternoon. Was working great for a while, then on the highway it started to bounce around and eventually stopped working.

Do I need to find a different speedo? Has anyone ever been able to fix their old speedo?

The odometer doesn't work anymore either.

Have you checked to make sure it is not the cable ?

I have gone thru a couple of them and got them working again when they got stuck. Odometer that is.

tried simple stuff like checking the cable?

Replacement gauges arent that much though.

your spedo should use the screw in type cable if it is correct for the year. The later model cam lock style will not work. The easiest is to make sure the cable is still screwed into the t-case. It might have fallen out.

I've had a cable twist off and break inside the housing. Be careful about buying new cables: not all screw-ins are the same. The metal receiver speedometers are different threads from the plastic ones are different from the clipons. I know that the cable Mark's off road sells fits the metal recepticals.

Here is what I have figured out.

My cable housing is kinked and not in the greatest condition. The cable its self is still intact. However, the end that goes into the T/C looks to be in bad shape. There is a picture but it is blurry. The notch on the cable looks worn down and the cable will slide into the T/C even when it isn't in the correct position.

Yes, this might seem obvious, but is the notch on a new cable more pronounced than the one in the picture? I'm able to spend money on a cable, but only want to do that if you guys concur that is the problem.

Also, I pulled out the speedo and hooked it up the the drill. As long as I am able to keep the drill spinning at a constant speed, the mph will stay constant.

edit: I'd like to buy a used one...But also like some recommendations on where to buy a new one.

Wow man, talk about blurry pic man.

If the drill trick works then chances are good that it is the cable. It should have a little nub that is on the end for going in only one way.

just a thought, if the end into the transfer is messed up would the plastic driver piece in the transfer also be screwed up??

Could be, would not be too hard to check. I would do it myself.

Here is a pic of my gear.

The teeth are flat on top and equal all around the gear.

Question: Are the teeth on the gear supposed to go all the way to the end of the gear? Does my gear look to be in good working order? It is about $26 for a new gear and I would prefer not to buy one if this looks to be in good shape.

Pic's a little blurry Dave, but it doesn't look dished enough to worry about. As long as the splines look even across the length, you're good to go.

The part on the end is supposed to look like that.

As Mark said, your gear looks just fine in the kinda blurry pic.

What does the inside of the other end of the same piece look like? Should be round with a slot in it for where the right cable to only fit in one way.
