I've replaced the plastic drive gear that mounts ( wich turns the speedo cable) inside the transmission twice now and both times it shredded after around 50 miles or so, the PO replaced the stock four speed with a five speed- could the gear actualy be differant? It installs rite in with no problem but sure does'nt last very long.

Yes, they can be different. There's a number stamped on one end (the tooth count IIRC) so you can match them up.

It could have one more or less teeth and be getting eaten up... I know the 5 speed gear has 18 teeth on the cable end.... At least on an 84 5 speed...

Thanks for this valued info, the speedo cable is new and in good shape, This gives me some enlightenment and a direction to go in, sounds like I've wasted a few bucks back in the day-was kinda concerned about something going bad inside the trans.
