I just did this mod yesterday, 5" spacers for the brace and to lower the crank. However, the tire will not raise up like it needs to. It hits the crank. Has another run into this? What's a fix?

Can you take some pics?

probably hitting the chain mechanism... when you lay a level across a tire the distance from the bottom of the level to the center of the wheel is 5"... i have on 275/70's though... kinda thinking of getting 285's but it probably isn't much different on that measurement... i used 3" spacers just to leave a little chain room to cinch it up

Hey Josh,

Any idea if this will work on a 1991?

It has been confirmed that the spare tire leveling kit will fit 91-97.

Josh, how big of tire can you fit with your kit?

It depends on whether or not you've got a tow hitch.

315-75-16 BF Goodrich KM/2 will fit if you don't have a trailer hitch bolted up, or if you have a pintle hitch on the rear crossmember. About 1/2" space between the tire tread and the panhard bar on my truck.

I've fit up to a 34.25 inch tire with receiver hitch in place. If there is enough distance between the backside of receiver tube itself and the panhard rod, you should be fine, up to 34.25 inches. If the backside of the receiver tube is longer than normal and reduces the space available, then the size of tire than can be fit will be reduced accordingly. Unfortunately, due the variations of hitches, I cannot say with 100% certainity it will fit, but you will likely be fine, especially if you have a slightly worn 315 tire as a spare. Also understand there is a huge variation in tire sizes when it comes to a 315 tire. Manufacturers these days are getting better about giving a tire than more closely matches the advertised size. My old MTR's where about 1 inch smaller than my new MTR's when new. Many brand new 315's, are bigger than the magic number of 34.25 inches and will likey be too big to work with a receiver hitch in place.

Clear as mud?

I did this mod last night with

Crank Mechanism : 3/8" diameter, 3/4" galvanized long spacer with m8-1.25 40mm stainless bolts, washers and lock washers.

Carrier : 3/8" diameter, 2" long galvanized spacer with m8-1.25 70mm stainless bolts, washers and lock washers

Tire is up significantly. It no longer hangs down lower than the differential as it used to.

Quite happy with this mod. Only differences I would do is to use 1/2" diameter spacers on the crank mechanism (per the OP) as the 3/8" diameter spacers may slip into the bolt holes on the mechanism plate and deform them a little. 3/8" diameter on the crank mechanism were just fine.

i thought so too... i did it on my 97' that i am selling with 4" spacers made with 1/2" nipples as you suggest and using the bolts at 5" long

i just finished it on the 94" i just got (triple locked Ol' Rusty), but switched to 3" long nipples and 4" long bolts... still using 1/2" nipples... the bigger nips just seemed more stable at the hdw. store... when i used the 4" nipple it seemed the rear of the tire actually was tipped downward a bit, creating a hanger in the very back... must admit to liking the more level hang of the 3" nip:bounce:

i really should have used lock washers like you did:doh: dammit!!

I think that should be good, in this video, I used 2" for the sides and 1" for the crank. I was just following the first post on this thread. I think they used 2" and .75", but as long as the crank handle still lines up, I guess that's all that matters.

This was great thank you. I am glad I found this thread with pictures and a good explanation as to why the 5" up and 5" down on the crank doesn't work at all.
I made a quick YouTube video of the spare tire mod that I did on the wife's LX450.

Thanks for this 🤙🏽
