Who's got one up there?

Sin? Pimp?

How's the noise?

Haven't seen one up there yet, but I still have my stock spare down below. :o

Mac,

I did it for 1,000 miles, I couldn't tell the difference. Most of the mileage was in Death Valley and it was fine. The only bad thing was ... since I had an empty roof rack but the spare tire... I had garbage duty ...

I had the tire at the very back of the roof rack so the noise was "normal".

Yeah I had mine up there on a trip or two, no big deal. Some pretty good wind noise comes from the rack itself (especially if you run the top rail !!) ...But unless you install a wind deflector just about any cargo situated towards the front of the rack makes a ton of noise.
Oh, be sure to use the rubber strip that fills the front channel or you will get even more noise from the rack.

Its not a problem anymore for me` cause I cant hear anything over those swampers ;)

SinCity thats right :)

i was thinking to buy Swamper LTB but i found it one star on road :D so forget it, what is ur sliders steps ?

personally, I would not put a spare up there unless you have a guardrail around the roofrack or tire

Sin,

Which Swamper do you have?

My first tires on my truck was SSR 35x10.50x16 and they SUCKED! Other than than the noise but they sucked in rocks (Moab) - rain - sand (Pismo) - dry pavement well .. Did I say they SUCK? :ban:

may i ask as to why? to prevent it from sliding off? to protect it? how come?

cuz I would not want it to fly off and kill somebody or damage something if I were to hit something or brake hard, or if the strap / fixture let loose...

I would not mount a tire to the roofrack with straps. AO has a tire holder, but I am not keen on it. The AO rack allows for things to be bolted down pretty easy. I would make a tire holder to accomplish this.

Tire+wheel combo is anywhere from about 70lbs+100lbs. Why put a spare on the roof and dramaticly increase your center of gravity?

also makes it somewhat easier to get to in a pinch.

(of course, not a good idea to just throw it off the roof...:D )

I've had one mounted there with AO's tire holder for a while.. I've had it mounted in the middle and didn't notice more noise than what's already there.. My intention was to only mount it when traveling and removing it after getting back home.. It turned out to be a pain to get it up there for every trip so I just left it there for about 8 months.. seemed to cause some wind resistant up there on the highway.. I have now removed it and mounted both spares to the rear bumper..

Most importantly: It looks cool.

Putting a 2nd spare on the roof rack is the main reason I'm looking at adding the AO rack to my cruiser. The stock rack with a yakima mega warrior can't handle the weight.

Two trips ago to the Saline Valley area, I ripped out the side wall on a front tire and sliced a rear to the cord on a very rocky section of trail. Definite driver error.:o Luckily the back one held air so we finished the trip. I have the only cruiser in the group, that I 4 wheel with, so no easy replacement if i had lost both tires.

I have been on two baja trips where others took out two same side tires. Breaking beads and hand mounting tires out in the middle of nowhere is a definite PITA.

A rear tire carrier like Slee's would be great, but that add on is a year or so off.

Questions for those with the AO rack:

Should I go with the half or full rail?

Anyone have experience with the new black color? Is the finish just as durable as the silver?

Thanks

I'll let you know tomorrow. I'm installing it in the morning. :)

but, if you already HAVE a rear bumper, couldnt you just do a dual tire mount? Personally i would rather throw two tires on the back then one on the top n one on the back.

Macneill, you didnt show up at carnarsie pier! we could have put it on there, there were guys swapping wheels and all kinds of madness. Neways...good luck tommorrow and post pictures when your done!

LOL. I'm on deck furniture building duty today. Well, measuring anyway. The first load on the rack will be some lumber tomorrow.

Did you guys have a subwoofer face off competition?

I'm not sure anyone makes a rear bumper with dual tire capacity for a 100 series. When I get the slee rear I will move the underneath spare to it. 2nd spare would go on roof when needed. The lower mounted spare and my OE trailer hitch are a concern when attempting steep drops or negotiating rocks. They seem to drag more often then not.

Mounting a spare on the roof is not is not my first choice. I would prefer one on the back and one underneath for center of garvity concerns. And for milder trail trips that is how I would do it. The rack gives me another option. And besides if Macneill and Sin City have one, then I need one too:grinpimp: .
