So I got my backpacking pack out, it is a 20-25 year old North Face internal frame pack. Unfortunately it has some mildew on it

I was going to throw it into our front loading washing machine to clean it up a bit. Can I use a splash of bleach to make sure the mildew is killed?

Any better ideas?

Lysol?

Then hand wash with soapy water, rinse and air dry?

Use Mountain Fresh Lysol!

Bleach or anything containing bleach will stain/remove any color where applied. It is bleach after all. I'd agree with Shane on the soap and water approach and let dry thoroughly.

you might want to check the room you had it stored in.. you might have a mold problem in the house.

I had my pack in the back of the Pig. Evidentally during a rain storm, a towel I had back there got wet and wicked water to the pack, causing the mildew

I did not notice in time.

The wifey went for it and used the front load washing machine with a splash of bleach. Damn if the pack isn't the cleanest it has been in a long while :D It doesn't seem the worse for wear.
