Solar Fridge

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd add to this one. I've had a Can Tire 100W (8A I recall) solar panel sitting around for a year or so, so finally picked up a cheap $20 30A chinese PWM controller. Although Glenn laid out some good points on PWM vs MPPT, for my use PWM makes more sense and it will also be used in the PWM sweet spot of under 170W. Glenn is correct that MPPT will get a net gain of tens of percent, but that's over the course of a longer period of variable light under cooler temperatures. However for low-light hot weather harvesting, my panel was still putting out 16 volts almost an hour after sundown in the shade (which is a benefit of monocrystalline cells) and thus my el-cheapo PWM was still charging it just fine.

The biggest kicker of all of this is that for my casual use I can buy 10 of these controllers for the price of a decent MPPT controller in case one dies. :P

I tested this on our big RV (not my offroad trailer), so I wasn't running a fridge, but for 3 days we were using a 4.4A water pump for toilet for 4 people, plus doing dishes 3x / day, misc washing of hands, cooking etc, plus a few incandescent trailer lights inside. The 12V deep cycle was almost full the entire weekend.

Next test will be to see how well it performs keeping my ARB fridge running in George Bailey.

to approximate your power output --measure voltage then current (in series)
volts x amps = watts.
I got peak 82 watts out of my last 2X40 watt mono in Canyonlands at noon (Morningstar Sunsaver)

Do my long sit test - post #34

Rather then start a new thread (as well) I thought I would post this up for anyone looking for Solar Kits. Long story short, after considering my time crunch for Moab, pocket book, searching, driving (including Polar Battery), reading, looking...in a moment of "oh well, might as well stop by and check what they havel" I went by the FraserWayRV shop in Abbotsford. Turns out this is the 10th annual open house. Lots on sale (including propane fire rings if you have been thinking of one). And...solar stuff. I bought the 160W Overlander Solar RV kit from Overlander Solar Kit (160 watts) | Go Power! on sale for $595.00. Mono panel and pmw controller (with outputs to two batteries), wiring and such included in the kit. All of the Go Power kits and panels are on sale. I thought the pricing was really good with all things considered (and my time crunch). Will see how it does during the 2 week trip to Moab, but if anyone else is looking for a solar kit you might want to check it out. Nationwide Fraserway open house...so should be the same at all.

I will watch this with much interest - solar is so cool.

The 80 watt setup for my 74 was more than adequate.
