So Kevin, about those windows... (2 Viewers)

Yeah, I haven't been able to convince Southco to make me the hardware I need yet.
Not very happy about that.
They have it printed in the catalog, but they don't seem to want to make the parts.
If they didn't make such nice hardware...........

That blows. I take it it's something custom that can't be had from Tacoma Screw or McMaster-Carr?

Ok, I admit to having NO experience with mag locks, and I'm not sure how small they make them or how much they cost, but what about using one of those with a fail secure electric strike? No power runs to it and it remains locked. Hit a switch to send some current and it pops open.

Now, for those with knowledge of these setups, please educate me.

Might have had a breakthrough with the hardware. (sung to a happy little tune) :bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

As for this (sorry for not noticing the response sooner)

I am trying to keep it a bit simpler than this, would like to stay away from any electric stuff to keep the installation as straight forward as possible.

So u might be able to get them down in the $2999 range now...

Kidding aside... Are you designing these to be used and installed the the current glass in the truck? Installed by the purchaser with no crazy glass drillig or anything?

Sounds great Kevin. Just got your Firestik mount in the mail last week and I can't believe how simple of a solution it is. Going to try my luck with their CB/FM splitter when I install it. Hopefully I don't end up with a bum unit. Can't wait to get a window conversion kit from you :D

How much would a set of these would cost??
Probably only half a bajillion now that I am making some hardware progress. :p
Seriously though, I have no idea, they will still certainly be very expensive.

I have a batch of hardware for the latch on the way, this is not even all the latch parts, still need mounts and hardware and custom made bits, just the raw latch and actuator parts, for one side, is $120 at wholesale cost.
There is easily another $200 in off the shelf parts on each side, not even looking at all the custom made parts that I had to engineer.

I'm looking at 700-800 that I would have to pay out per set just to get the stuff that I would need to then do my work.

It will not be cheap. ;p

Good, hope all the parts work just fine for you, if you get a new stock part you should be fine since the guys at Firestik set up a different test procedure for those splitters since we talked.

Yup, once the hardware is finalized I would be able to make the center panels out of other materials like aluminum. Oddly enough that would actually cost more since I'm designing them to be used with the OE glass. :p

I got another few important pieces of the puzzle this month and the last major piece is set to be delivered early in February.

Can't wait to get my hands on a set of these. Saved my OE glass for just this option.

Sounds like this will be a much better alternative to the Aussie sliding windows.

I know, it's KILLING me, I'm waiting on o-n-e l-a-s-t p-a-r-t.......... :bang:

I'm really excited to get it all together with the right hardware, it's going to be very slick. :p
The nice thing is that once everything's in order I should be able to make them for the other series with just new template work.

Is it still looking like it'll be 700-800 for a set to do up both windows?

In regards to screens

Wow, another great project from Kevin.

I was thinking about warmer climates and screens and wondered if a screen with a magnetic frame could simply be placed over a open passenger door window or the open sunroof on clear nights... keep the air flowing and the bugs out, it would probably even stay on while driving, LOL!

Is your final prototype going to have a screen option?

Nothing has really changed as far as a screen is concerned.
Due to the utility nature of the windows there is not a good way to seal them off.

Most times traveling if there are bugs there is also a lot of heat and we want every window in the truck open, it's more of a PITA to try and seal all the windows (and keep bugs out any time a door is opened) than it is to just hang a mosquito net in the back of the truck.
We keep one with us and we have had to use it twice in all the years of truck camping.
I'm not spending any time worrying about screens until everything else is finished.

On a positive note I have the prototypes for the parts I have been waiting for and have been figuring out all the little details.
I am very excited with how things are actually coming together!

Not that they show much, but pics are always fun:
