Does anyone know if you can sell a California-registered and operable vehicle that won't pass California emissions standards to someone out-of-state? I know the seller is responsible for the vehicle passing smog if sold in California. Because emission standards vary, and many counties that are non-congested do not require smog certificates, it seems that there must be a way to do this. Thanks for any insights!
By the way, I am looking to sell my beloved 78 Fj40 that is a real beauty and runs great.

You can sell it to anybody you want to. As a matter of honor you should tell the buyer the car won't pass CA smog.

What is so wrong with the truck that you can't fix it and pass smog?

I bought it from New Jersey. I was fortunate to be able to register in a non-congested county in CA, so smog certificate was not required. It's going to cost between 2k - 3.5k to make it pass. Seems like a lot of money to spend just to sell it in CA. My opinion is that CA emissions standards should not apply to collectibles (like mine ,which I only put 300 miles per year on and keep garaged 24x7), nor should they apply to cars /trucks pre 1980. Mine is a 78. That's a 37 year old car. Just my opinion, but I don't believe I am creating too much smog at 300 miles a year in an uncongested county, driving off road. Thanks for input all!

Those would be Santa Cruz prices..

Yes, you absolutely can sell it out of state. However, would you like me to move this to the 40 section so people can help you get it to pass smog? They really are not that complex. And 3K is way over the top.

Thanks Mace! I have it in the 40 section already. That said, I would be open to getting it smogged, but live in the SF Bay Area, so would need to find folks who could help me in that area. Thanks!

Georg at Valley Hybrids, or Mudrak would be excellent sources. Both know cruisers back and forth and are solid people.
