Go get a an add a leaf in the back and crank up your torsion bars, cheap 2" lift right there, if add a leaf isn't enough in the back get a shakle too.

will I get a better ride with the upgraded torsion bars, because I don't want to sacrifice ride quality to save a few bucks. I drive my 4runner 50+ miles a day, but I also would like to get some decent tires under it.

I'm thinking some Bias Swamper TSL's, LTB's or Irok's. For wheeling use only of course, I'm keeping my itty bitty street tires for DD use.

I have the Downey 2" inch rear springs that work well with stock cranked torsion bars (low profile bumpstops). The Downey bars are uncomfortable on the road and too stiff for good articulation. If you really want to try the heavier Downey bars I have some for sale. Add a 1" body lift if you want go with a 33" tire.

Mine Torsion Bars are cranked a bit and with new shocks they ride like a caddy, literally, I can't believe it.

I have a friend that is in the process of removing a kit that is a combo of Rancho and Downey stuff. It has different torsion bars and different upper a-arms, RS9000 shocks, etc. It was a high dollar kit at the time but he is doing a SAS so he may be willing to sell it cheap. it was on his 88 4Runner and now is on his 92. It lifts it about 2-3inches. I think he still has the rear leaf packs somewhere too. pm me if you have any interest.

Since you have an '86 try and find an 89-95 v6 4runner's torsion bars. If they don't have a million miles they will take added pre-load on an older four banger much better than your original bars. I would also recommend taking the rear anchor, bolt and hardware. This will make adjustments MUCH simpler than the double lock nut setup on the '86.

BJ spacers are also the best IFS bang for the buck. I ran Downey 2" rear springs and found ANY extra items other than the spare negates the added lift hight. I would recommend their 3" set or at a minimum their 2" springs and 1.5" longer shackles.
