A few house projects in the rearview and bow elk season almost done; finally getting time to get back on this. Crazy, I thought I’d be driving it by April! Long block is all assembled and painted. Running by October(?) is the plan…. Currently…. This timeline all depends on if I can get away for a last hurrah elk hunting next week or not.

Yes, I’ll re-clean the gasket mounting surfaces for fuel pump, etc. Also like to add some whiteout to the stamp pad for the block numbers to make it easier to see in the future. Since of course there will be no leaks or gunk caking it up…..

One of the air rail tube broke when I was taking this one apart so today I got into my spares tote and found a good chunk of one and welded it up so I could get the air rail installed. Another week or two and this one will be running.

After that air rail fix, I decided to desmog this one. Really just want to remove any variables for starting the fresh engine.

Engine is in, almost everything hooked up. Working on brakes, exhaust and fuel today so I can drive it when it starts.

That fuel looks fine, right???

I thought I was going to get it fired up today but I forgot the z shaped coolant hose! Work the next 4 days so it’ll be Tuesday I guess.
Air cleaner is just set on there.

Had some friends over this morning.

I know you said friends, but is the freezer full as a result?:hmm:
I wish. Really hard to get a moose tag around here. But from that pic, it may actually just be a large whitetail……

It runs! I’ve got about 15 miles on it and 5 heat cycles. Sounds great, fires right up, runs smooth with good power through all 4 gears. The studded tires were put on in November 2001 based on the receipt I found so don’t want to get them going too fast….

I am amazed; besides a couple bad bulbs, everything works, even the carb fan kicked right on! Did take it apart to remove the wasps nests though….

Checked the valves and they’re all in spec. Time for interior cleaning and putting miles on it then get it for sale and find another one.

Today I did the brakes. I bled them the other day and they kind of worked but it wasn’t safe. Tried to rebuild the wheel cylinders but they were way too pitted for a quick hone and seal. New calipers, pads, wheel cylinders and shoes. Stops great now! This is the first parked 60 I’ve worked on that the e brake arms moved freely too. That was a bonus.
Didn’t take any brake pics, so here’s the 7 pound pork shoulder I smoked today and the Mac n cheese that’s going on the smoker now while the piggy rests. Oh, and more moose.

Cleaned the shiznit out of this thing today! Scraped all the fuzz off the roof (no headliner), pulled the hvac fan and vacuumed that dirt dauber/wasp nest pit out and vacuumed all the seats and carpet.
My initial cleaning didn’t reveal any bullets. I was beginning to think the heathens that owned this prior weren’t using it like God intended! Luckily, my deep cleaning produced 2 rifle cartridges tucked under the rear heater! They were even .257 Roberts! Nothing like a semi obscure Bob round to restore your faith in humanity!

Also found a recipe for the studded snow tires that are on it now; Nov 08. Also an oreillys receipt for an oil filter but curiously no oil….. little notepad with mileage and services done stops at 125k with an oil change in feb of 08. Currently 132k on it.

I ordered new door window run channels and outer window wipers because you can’t even move these things up or down!

Meanwhile, I stepped out of what I know and picked up a project 85 Isuzu trooper today! I’m a sucker for a cheap project.

I don't know if you've seen any of their social media content, but its hilarious.

The only social media I have is ih8mud…. Or when my wife shows me something on Facebook and I say “message them that I have cash in hand and trailer is hooked up!” (Then when I get home with it she says WTF did you buy that for?!) That line has worked for at least 3 FJ60’s, 4 FJ40’s, a Honda CRX, Jeep Cherokee XJ, 3 broke Harley’s and now an Isuzu Trooper!

When I type it out like that, it appears like there could be a car problem. But I don’t have a problem with it!

50 miles on the engine, did an oil change and all the diffs, trans and t-case.

Now doing the door glass channels and outer window wiper (felts). May as well scrape the purple tint off the couple windows that have it.

Does the tint smell nasty when you scrape it?
I had/have an old airstream that when I scraped the tint off it smelled like a cross between sour rotting death and a chemical poison.

You bet your biscuits it smells nasty! I’d say your description is pretty spot on.

Finished all the window channels and out wiper seals yesterday. Today I drove it about 40 miles running errands. It has a few things that bug me and I consider safety items. Whenever I get something with the intention of selling it, I want it to leave me safe! All lights, signals, horn, wipers working, as well as stable steering and good brakes. For this one, the horn, fuel gauge and rear passenger blinker and brake light weren’t working so those were the order of business.

Horn was as I suspected, dirty contacts. Popped the wheel off and cleaned everything up; boom! It’s horny again!

Rear lights was a little more of a challenge. Someone had wired in trailer wiring and the butt connectors broke. Not much room in that panel but redid all those with solder joints, then cleaned the bulb sockets and we’ve got bright signals and brake lights.

Took the fuel sending unit out and it was as crusty as suspected. Popped the cover off and sprayed contact cleaner and very gently used a nylon brush to clear the sediment. Back in and working as it should.

Dome light was intermittent, turned out to be a bad bulb so that was easy.

Both front fender markers were toast so I had a pair of TYR aftermarket ones on my shelf so in they went.

All I’m waiting on now is the new taillight lenses to show up and I’ll put them on my 60 and swap my original passenger one on here.

I am pretty sure I found a buyer for this one. A friend of my dad’s lives not far from me on a few acres “off grid”. This summer there was a big wildfire caused by some crack-roaches shooting tannerite set in some trees…. Well, he was not far upwind of where they were shooting and from the time he saw smoke to the time he left his property was about not long. He got his dog, cat and a few papers out and lost everything else to the fire. He’s retired and lives very modestly so this was a pretty devastating loss to say the least.

Anyhow, he had a 4x4 T100 that burned up and he’s been wanting to find another 4x4. He heard I was building this one and came to look at it a couple weeks ago. Today he let me know he’d like to get it. I always figured I’d sell this one for whatever I was into it, no profit, so that’s exactly the deal I told him. Anticipation of this helped make the decision to desmog it knowing it’d stay in WA, also why I did some extras like the window channels. Supposed to get it this weekend if it all works out.

I finally just watched that. My wife said that’s me, except for losing motivation. Just buy another “because this one’s almost done”.
