Yakima round bar racks with a riser.

I could get away with a shorter riser, and I might cut these in half, but this is what they sold. Without it the rear cradles hit the roof when the boats are up there. I have a 10’ door in the shop and the vehicle only clears by an inch with the racks.

The rollers and cradles came from a second hand sports store in Minden. All of it for $25. The Folbot I also purchased in Minden for just over $100 IIRC.

Patrick sells awning brackets for the Bowfin. I requested just the horizontal plates from him, four, and set them up for mounting Yakima crossbars. I've made this mod for the Bowfin rack on both the 60 and 80 and you can use either short or long crossbars to carry one or two boats.

why wouldn't one tie the boat directly to the rack?

If it's a single boat you could, but to carry two, which I often do, bars are needed.
