Awl, just sent you a PM

a.greenspan Thanks for the pics. What type of belts are those?

From the research that I have been doing for most of the morning...

There are lap belt models of the 45
There are shoulder belt models with a bolt on mount (like awls)
and there are integrated mounts in newer style tops.

Does anyone have any details on years available....

Seat belt pics

These are my shoulder belt mounts from my 1978 Canadian spec. FJ45 LPB... possibly soon to be yours :D

1973 Toyota factory 3 point seatbelts .
Co-driver belt is a 3 point static belt (factory)
Both belts are not very useful !!!
The upper shoulder belt mount points (factory) in these FJ45 pickup cabins are dumb, same dumb thing in Awl_TEQ`s 45 I think.
These Toyota mounted belts are unsafe at any speed, they mounted them only because the law
Cheers
Peter

* for safety buy a 4 point belt

I agree they are not perfect but they are original to the truck. They few times I wore mine (I should say the few times I actually drove my truck, I always wear my seatbelt) it wasn't uncomfortable. I believe the law around here states that if the vehicle came with them from the factory then they must be present to be road worthy. I also think you can upgrade to a four or five point harness, but you can't downgrade to a lap belt only. I'm not with the Transport Canada so don't take my word as law :D.

What's up Doc (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

Here's another few pictures for frame of reference. These are from my 1980 HJ45. They also have a single captured nutsert in the pillar. Interesting change from Awl's to the 1980 vintage.

The first two are close-up's of the driver's side and the third is the passenger side. Which I guess because it's RHD, it doesn't really matter.

Keep up the good work, I'm enjoying your build.

Hi all,
I just found this thread while searching. My 1974 FJ45 LWB removable hard top pickup has lap-only belts. I want to upgrade to a retractable 3 point shoulder belt.

What is the best/strongest/safest way to do this? I don't intend to take the hard top off. Should I be trying to get a nut into the pillar somehow? If so, what does it need in terms of strengthening, like a large backing plate or something?

Cheers,
Henry.

Did you HJ already have the nutserts on the pillar for these belts. I just got some retractable belts thinking I would install them this way. The PO had them install on the screw to the left in your image below. Which obviouslywouldn't be as solid as that large bolt. I have a hole in my pilar where your belt is mounted, but its just a hole, not threaded nut.

While a old post (five years) I plan on using the Canadian style in my 65 FJ45. Since I didn't have any fixed nuts I plan on using nut inserts instead cutting the top and install a fix nut then weld back together. Besides having four inserts instead one to hold the bracket it's also in rounded section which is stronger than flat metal. I'm am curious if the brackets I bought from dr_claw are the ones off Awl_TEQ truck.:hmm:

My guess this was factory installed. Toyota did different things for different markets. Not sure you'll get a response from 24HOURSOFNEVADA he hasn't logged onto to his account since last Dec.

I think they are. I recall a post where he was selling them or somebody was buying them. Prolly you!

Now my question!

How the heck do you run topless with those mounts on the hardtop??? The only option i see is switching to lap belts. Seems really odd they wouldnt have any info on what to do with them when removing the top...

I had a wanted thread and he responded. I was surprised how clean they where coming from the north land where rust has claimed so many cruisers. Since you don't the brackets you don't have the pieces spot welded to the bottom of the hard top you want to sell?

In the US the 9/73 to 1/76 FJ40 used a lap belt that bolted to the bucket seats. If your pickup seats used the same hinge style might get a set to use when you take the top off the cab. 1/76 the seat belts change to three point. The seat style stayed the same until the 79 model.

If the vehicle came equipped with three point seat belt running lap belts may not be legal.:meh:

I just find it so odd that toyota would mount the 3 point to the hard top with no way of removing the top??? I highly doubt any local authority would have a clue to even look at the belts and where they should be. I have another thread with pic. Ill prob put lap belts in the truck. There are the 2floor mounting bolts

I haven't looked in a long time but I recall the bracket just bolting in with about 4 bolts. It bolts into the side(corner) panel at the top edge and has no affiliation with the hard top cap that I remember. But I rarely remember things anymore. Or I remember them differently than they happened.
