Should I use this oil in a 1HZ?

I'm driving a 2015 76 landcruiser with a 1HZ with 43000 on the clock, it has a small aftermarket turbo

Here in Saudi Arabia, Castrol sells a heavier mineral oil 25w 50 which has 'viscous boosters' (additives) and it promises "up to 2x engine life" on the container. It claims to keep sludge and carbon deposits down and the engine cleaner. It's not any more expensive than the good alternatives like Mobile.

Who doesn't want 2x engine life? My concern is mainly that I've been hearing on forums that 15w 40 is the best oil for these engines, and not to use something too heavy. Keep in mind, where I live the average daily temps are around 40-45 C. And it does sometimes reach 50. Even at night, most the year, it doesn't dip below 30. In the winter months I do run the Mobile.

Any thoughts?

If you want 2 million km out of your HZ then yes. The HZ is practically bulletproof and you can easily run close to a million km with simple maintenance.
But jokes apart, I have a 2001 HZ105 here in Botswana. It does got hot here in Dec-Feb (maybe not as hot as the Arabian Peninsula), but I keep my maintenance simple at every 5,000km usually with Castrol oil all year around (I'll need to check the viscosity I use). We get 40-45C in the summer and temp drops as low as 5C on some winter mornings. I have 240,000km on the clock and the engine is smooth and very strong.

my parents had 2 1HZ powered cruisers when I was growing up. my pa's one went to 700,000kms before he sold it. my moms one went to 1,200,000kms. both never had more than simple maintenance done. my pa has used Castrol his entire life, mainly 12w 40.

we're in zim. our temps aren't as extreme as you but we do have altitude, 1500m here in Harare, which has an effect.

but you have raised a good question about oil. ive been thinking about using Castrol edge sport, which is a 10w 60 in my 12HT. I used to run it in my KZ-TE surf and it was amazing stuff.

20-50 is what Toyota Australia package under their name. I have never used less than a 50 weight and I have used Castrol quite a lot.

I'm a big fan of Castrol RX super in my truck and run Castrol Edge in my Harley.

cant remember but youve got a 12HT right? would you run the edge sport in it?

I run Castrol RX super because it's good diesel oil I can pick it up cheap as I'm in the heavy transport industry. I'm not sure but from memory I think Castrol gave me the nod on Edge to run in the 12ht best give the a call and they will let you know.

cool, thanks. i ran it in my KZ-TE and it was great, so i think it should be fine. but it always helps to have other peoples experience

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll stick with it unless I hear good reason to change.

I've been changing at 3000-3500 km anyway so most any oil should be OK. Oil is cheap here 5L for about 13$. 10$ for the cheap stuff.

I like to stay with one brand and weight through out ownership and like to pass this info over to whoever buys my old car trucks etc.
It probably does happen these days with all the cleaners but old school was to never swap oils as it could glug up air rate and cause starvation but oil aint oil any more sole. :)

Just throwing good oil away changing it before its due.

Depends on the driving. I've been changing mine around the 3000km mark also. I drive an hour each day, but only about 20km distance total (heavy city traffic). So lots of hours, but few kms. I did the math and the number of hours was equivalent to 12,000kms of highway driving. Ends up as 3 oil changes a year, so not bad anyhow.

Get your next lot sampled instead of changing it and see how it's holding up. You could probably do 3x that interval at a minimum.

I've got my 4BD1T in pieces again (long story) and I'm astounded how clean the internals are. It's been thrashed with EGT up to 900C and sustaining 750C and 20+ psi for several minutes at a time. Oil changes between 10-15,000km and was last apart 57,000km ago.

My 2.0tdi has an oil quality sensor and is giving me around 24,000km between changes. It's 10 years old now with almost 200,000km and no oil related issues. Mainly ABS and reversing sensor issues.
