I have been casually wanting a fridge, dont we all want all they toys? My wife and i do a lot of traveling and camping, but honestly we are back packers and do OK with really simple dry food. That being said my wife is vegetarian and i think a fridge might be nice for her produce and stuff like that. We dont cook complicated food on the trail. Like i said, we are simple light weight backpackers. Also i am already 100% wired up with duel batts and a Blue Sea fuse block.

In the truck we have a sleeping platform we use. We also have a gamaviti rack and have lots of storage options. But we like to keep the platform open to sleeping. I think the fridge would have to go on top of the platform so i could slide it OVER the rear wheel well and give us the maximum sleeping space. but even that would really cramp our leg space some.

I have been thinking a 30-40qt would be good for us and not take up a huge amount of space. Also it will be tricky to lift the lid with it ON TOP of the sleeping platform. The Dometic 32 or 35s look good. If i go up to the Engel MR040 it will lift from the side which would be really nice. Also it looks like the Engel MRO40is on sale for about $650 which is a great price. But honestly i am not in huge rush or 100% sure about this purchase.

The other day i came across a used ARB 50qt for sale close by. It is used but still in the box with no use. So used but NIB.local for under $600. Honestly i think it is just maybe bigger than i want and the lid configuration will make it a pain to open and close with it sitting on top of the sleeping platform.

Is this too good of a price to pass on or should i wait and get the smaller size i want that will fit better even if it cost a little more for a smaller fridge? Does it make since to pay MORE for a SMALLER fridge because it fits my truck better?

Am i being stupid to pass on this?

I try to avoid being one of the guys that buys stuff just to buy it. I actually like keeping it simple. That is kind of why i am really avoiding the whole RTT think and everything. I really like the simplicity of sleeping in the truck. I hate to fill it up and them start thinking about a RTT to salve the "problem" i just created.

I have an old 37qt arb fridge with the metal case I bought in a similar situation. New in box but like 8 years old for about half price at an auction. I could never swing the full price of one. Best purchase for traveling/camping I've made ever.

No more soggy food!

Easy solution would be to set your fridge outside the truck when you are sleeping. Or build up a platform (sleeping legs can go under) for it to sit on and have a slide out...

I guess it depends if you stay in bear country or not. I used to keep my fridge outside the door of my trailer, would ratchet strap the lid shut to keep racoons out. We don't have many bears in Texas

I don't know if YOU should buy a 50 qt, but I personally wouldn't want one any smaller... except to use as a dedicated freezer, in addition to the 50qt! They fill up fast, especially if you're going to pack a lot of produce.

Like a lot of folks, a fridge is my #1 favourite accessory. I would do what it takes to rejig my storage/sleeping platform to accommodate one.
Do you carry a cooler now? How big?

That is a good idea. I will look in to it. But i do spend a lot of time in bear country, Montana and Wyoming right in th heart of grizzly country. But maybe in other areas it would be a good option.

Few folks regret buying fridges. Many tend to move up to larger ones. Very useful at home too... and nice NOT to have to go home immediately after grocery shopping. But if you are looking for a smaller fridge that fits under your sleeping platform, then I'd look at the Dometic CD30 drawer.

Buy the biggest fridge you can afford. You will never want a smaller version, you will always want larger.

Best camping purchase i ever made !

I have used an Engel/ARB MT-45 fridge for over 14 years. Best purchase for camping ever. If you decide not to purchase the 50L ARB, please PM me with the seller's information. I'd love to find one for that price.

I "snooze and lose" on this one. I really want a MRO40 engel anyway to get the side open lid. But this arb was a killer deal. I ended up calling the guy a few days ago and it was sold.

So I have 2 fridges. Nothing better when camping. Look on Craig's list for OLD Norcold fridges. They were made by Sawafuji, in Japan, and come up surprisingly often for sale. These are the same as old ARBs, old and current Engels. I have a 2003 Engel I've owned since new and a mid 80s-90s Norcold/Sawafuji that work perfectly with no issues. Really well made gear.

But the old Norcolds can often be had for $100 or so and work as well as a new one.
