A friend of mine from here, Phoenix area, is going to school in Manhattan and has a 97 4Runner with a 3.4L V6 and auto trans. It crapped out on him while driving with no warning other than a slightly higher engine temp gauge reading. It was towed to a shop in Fort Lee where they have diagnosed a blown head gasket but want to charge him $3500 to replace both head gaskets! He wants to keep driving the vehicle but there has to be a reputable shop in the area who would do a quality head gasket replacement for less than that?

I understand the heads would need to be checked for damage, but other than a good scuffing, and the requisite timing belt, tensioner pulley, water pump, belts and hoses replacement, it should be a straightforward job. This shop wants to price in a complete rebuild of the heads and engine and I think they are just out to get as much money as they can from a student.

So if anyone knows of a good shop in the area or maybe a member that works out of their house that would be interested in tackling this job for some extra money, please PM me for his contact info. Thanks alot and greetings from Copper State Cruisers here in Arizona! - Brian

I'd also be curious about good NYC area shop recommendations. I go to one in Brooklyn that's decent but they haven't proven to be tip-top for 4x4 specific jobs

For normal maintenance stuff, I go to Manners Motors in LIC. I just took my 62 to ok4wd in Jersey for more specific 4wd stuff. It's not cheap and it's quite a journey. Especially if you need to leave it there.

I have a great mechanic out here on Long Island. Trustworthy and fair. He is a hot rod guy so he "gets" non-stock stuff. He is in East Northport - about 40 miles from the city (NYC). If he wants to bring it out here have him give me a call and I'll help with logistics if I can. The shop is a 1 minute walk from the Long Island Rail Road station to get to/from NYC.

the problem is the NYC area shops are around $100 per hour and a bunch double book these jobs . most shops dont want that job unless they can make a killing on it. they would rather fix belts and hoses all day and make there money from volume.
if he is in NJ he should just try to find a local guy rather than bring it back into the city and pay for all that towing .
