A life time ago I drove trucks that had two speed rear axles, referred to as split rear axles. Those had a cable running up the transmission shifter
with a knob similar to a choke cable. Knob was just below the knob for the transmission. Four speeds became eight speeds. Five speeds became ten speeds. They were kinda tricky to shift. But once you got down in a single motion could shift up a gear in the transmission while shifting the rear axle from high to low gear. This was useful with heavy loads climbing hills. Probably be handy in a FJ40 having a high and low range for each gear. Doubt you could shift an overdrive with a cable. A solenoid might work if it have a long enough throw. Have the cable control a three pole switch. OD shifter in a different location would make it hard to down shift the OD while up shift the transmission in a single motion.

That sounds very cool. I bet it would come in handy, in multiple situations. I read something on, something like with an FJ40 4 speed 4wd High, and Low, plus an Overdrive unit High, and Low, it's like getting 16 gears or speeds out of it. Should be fun trying it out.

Here's a short video I found of a '71 FJ40 demonstrating an Overdrive unit. I don't recall him saying what brand overdrive it was, but I would think it would be similar. If my OD shifter ends up this close to the seat, I''' probably have it heated and bent slightly to not be as close to the seat. Enjoy:

I was really hoping to see him get it up to 60. I feel like my 4 speed needs a better 4th gear to get lower revs at the top end and cruise at 55 mph.

Me too! LOL! I'm going to give it a shot.

However, 39 years ago at the ripe old age of 16 I had both hips reconstructed. Since then I've had 5 spinal surgeries, PLUS a WHOLE LOT MORE. So I am a little bit uneasy about clutching and driving a manual again, but I'm going to try. If it proves to be too painful, I'll swap the manual transmission out for an automatic.
