alright I’ll support the little guys, I need the idler pulley too can you get that? Or point me in the right direction to get an oem one.

Try this:
eBay item number:
201531353512

I think the seller is a mud member but not 100% sure. I saw a thread that he created but cannot find it now.

He accepted my offer of $32, so give a try.

I would like to take you up on the $99 shipped for the tensioner and serpentine for my 98 Land Cruiser. What would be the ETA to 77406? Also could I pick it up local from you in Houston since I'm in Richmond. Thanks.

I wish I would have read the whole thread and removed the whole ps pump instead of the pully. I cant get the pully back on properly. There is at least a half inch of play(the nut is snug but the shaft moves in and out). The whole job went so smoothly, o didn' even have any trouble getting the center timing cover out and back in, but this pully is killing me. Ant input would be helpful

So is there a way to check what item is bad before going through all of this?

I have a whine, it doesn’t appear to be affected by the A/C or power steering...

I held a stethoscope to some of the pulleys, but as you know, there is not much room in there, I couldn’t find anything.

I don’t want to rip all of this stuff off only to learn it is unrelated....doesn’t look like I can just hook a rachet to anything to lossen the tension and test where the issue is....??

Pull the serpentine belt off the tensioner, spin the pulley, if it grinds, makes noise, or spins for a long time, chances are you'd have good results at least replacing the bearing. Tensioners also loose tension over time so if it's your original one, might not be a bad idea.

That sounds easy enough...guessing the hard part is getting it back on afterward?

Ehh, once you do it once it's not bad. Just pay attention to how the belt is routed in case it slips off any other pulleys. It would be a good time to spin all pulleys just in case. How many miles ya got?

Got it, ya that was the plan....was hoping to give everything a spin to find where it is coming from.

I have 225k.

Not that I can tell anything just by looking at it, and the picture doesn’t show it very well, but the pulley on the left of this picture, looks about 10yrs older than any of the others and has more rust...but I am not even sure what pulley that is. Lol

That was easier than I thought, for some reason I was picturing having to remove the tensioner....was thinking to myself, why can’t this be like ever other car were you just pry it loose.

Anyway, I spun all of the “wheels.” I don’t know exactly what to look for, but all of them turned smoothly. They all seemed to offer a little different resistance, but seemed normal.

Also, this job could have saved me a disaster. One of my power steering hoses was against the belt and was slowly getting cut by it as it turned. Guessing when I had the timing belt replaced they placed the hose there.

Anyway, the search continues for the whine....

Ok, so yesterday I drove for about 3.5 hours. The whine was ever persistent, started right up this morning going to work, the battery discharge light flickers for a second, then is comes on steady.

Turned around, hooked it to the charger and grabbed a different vehicle.

Is it safe to say that I need a new alternator?

Does everyone buy OEM or is there a recommend brand?

Thanks, I knew if I waited long enough the whine would figure itself out....

Or go for Denso reman.

Excellent thread, i just finished replacing my idler, tension pulley, and belt. The tensioner bearing was gone it was freely spinning. The chirping is gone but i still have a whine like a supercharger between 2200-2300rpm cant figure out what it could be. Power steering pump?

I would check your charging system...I too I initially thought my whine was power steering related....I flushed the system but the whine still stayed.

As you prolly read above, mine was the alternator.

The numbers are correct any other way to check the charging system other than checking its voltage? Hmm it did start after i went offroading a few months back maybe its just full of dust and i can blow it out with compressed air.

I use a Solar BA7. It is about 70.00 bucks and can check the battery and the alternator.

Perhaps autozone or other chain rent them out....

This thread is very informative thanks to the original poster. I’m conscious of spending too much on my 2000 LC. I was thinking of ordering the Dayco kit from rockauto. We get hosed for oem parts here in Canada. Is this a good idea? Anyone have experience with the kit?
