Hey guys I have a semi float housing I was going to pull the diff and axles out of. I went to remove the dowel bolt that holds the spacer locking the c clips in place.

it was less than finger tight and was sheard off half way in the threads. I have tried tapping on it, spinning it out with a strong magnet. Can’t get it out and it’s too tight of a space to get a drill in there.

Is there another way to get the dam c clips out so I can get the axles out to work on it on a bench?

That’s the thing I can’t get that center shaft and spacer out. That retainer dowel bolt half is still stuck in there... Sorry pulled that last pic off the internet. Cruisers all should have come with full floats.

I’m thinking if I put the whole axle housing and shafts on end in my press maybe I could squeeze it enough to slip a c clip out, it might fit.

I would look at rotating the axle and seeing if you can punch the c clip off away from you/ Not sure if that makes
sense. Try using a punch on each tip of the c clip at the same time. If you pull one axle at the hub, and push the other
axle at the hub you might create enough of a gap or looseness for it to work on the side you push.

Not really I guess if the center shat is still there. Just reread that.

I watch too much tv. That being said, a guy drilled out the center of a broken crank bolt enough to
create a rough chamfered hole. He then used JB metal weld into the divit, and then screwed it back into
the hole so it would seat up against the broken face of the broken bolt in the hole. Let is set up, and then
when he unthreaded it, it had bonded to the broken piece and it just spun out with the rest attached.
I presume some brake clean was used and it was airblown dry before he reinserted the bolt.
Maybe?? It's a crazy idea.

Also, the center shaft will have spun. It might be creating tension against one side of the broken bolt or the other.
See if you can rotate it slightly and see if it unloads in your fingers? That might help if it isn't being pressured from
one side or the other

Yeah I figure if I can get the diff out of the housing I have a good chance of getting that broken peice out. As it is in the housing there no great way to get at it, it’s hard to even see down the hole. No chance of getting a drill near it. I thought I might be able to shake it loose by tapping at the center pin and the broken part a 1/2 inch down the hole. But no luck so far.

Can't get enough to push the c clips out?
air-driven jig saw and sacrifice the center shaft? Or drill a big hole through the center shaft and cut from the inside out?
One cut above and one cut below the axles? Now I'm reaching....

So close to getting the c clips out by pushing the axles in and prying the spider gear back but just not enough.

Yeah I would be up for cutting the center shaft or axles. there’s no space to get at the axles.

Trying not to destroy the diff or housing. No wonder the auzzies banned semi floats!

This happens more : Differential Shaft Pin Broken

and one solution was cutting the pinion shaft pin and weld a bolt on it and then insert firmly and turn, or weld 1 sec, or drill trough...
Do you have a picture of the broken pin?

cut of the thread so it does not works against extraction:

It’s the pinion shaft pin I guess is the proper term.
I can take one tonight. It has a 1/2 inch of thread from the head to the break. Then I assume it has a couple threads before it necks down into the dowel end part. So it would be extremely hard to weld onto 1/2 down in the hole you can’t see into.

Thanks for that link, sounds like it happens more often than I thought and exactly the same as my situation.

Thanks! It’s all spare parts for me, that axle was taking up space so I thought I would break it down to store it. I have a full float for both my trucks. I have a hoarding problem.

Greencruiser did this once. I think he attacked it with an angle grinder. Maybe he cut the center block out or cut a spider gear in two. Message him. Next time I see him I will ask.

You can't crack a c clip with a chisel?

I was busy last night and didn’t get a chance to get at it. That might work but there’s not a lot of space to get in there. I going to try the welding rod first. Stick a short piece of rod down the hole and hit it with the clamp for a sec and then try to spin it out. If that doesn’t work I might get more destructive and try that!

This isent mine but exactly what mine will look like. From the thread hj 60 posted.
