Probably posted here before, but have you guys seen these?
YouTube - Screw Log Splitter

I bet I could get the through shaft for my PTO winch and make an attachment for one of these to run right off my front bumper. Interesting.

maybe. search for vids on it. The design in this one vid is very slow. Another guy's is fast. Maybe it has to do with the type of screw or the green of the wood.

looks like an accident waiting to happen if you ask me.(what happens if the device gets hung up in a piece of wood, and what happens if you need to turn the device off in a hurry)...

I would build my own wood splitter if I needed to split wood all the time and most likely use a honda air cooled small engine to power the hydraulic pump. Or if you have a tractor that might be a good source for hydraulic inputs.

We split countless loads of wood in Boyscouts 20-25 years ago using a screw type splitter, kind of like the top one. We had ours on a truck with an auto and the splitter would stall out the tranny if it hit a hard spot, just jumping in the cab and slowly giving it gas while watching would get you through a tough piece. I can't speak for a manual trans, it seams like it might be a little less forgiving though.

As far as doing something with a pto, I suppose it's possible. The biggest problem would be the height from the ground, the log needs something to push against otherwise you end up with a heavy/dangerous propellor spinning on the front of your truck.

Or the gearing of the truck..... Yet another excuse for dual t-cases.

You probably wear a helmet to ride your bike too. :flipoff2:

In the first clip the guy used a chunk of wood to raise the piec he was splitting off the ground.

Mark A. has some rear-facing PTOs that were used on fire trucks. If it fit under the tub you could design multiple attachments that connected to a receiver and the PTO shaft coming out next to it.

1. Blender
2. Hot shower with a water pump and an exhaust pipe heat exchanger. Bonus: long hose to get the water from a creek.
3. Aux electric hybrid power unit with a basket full of deep-cycle batteries and a 20hp electric motor.
4. 24" circular saw a la

now I'll add

4. Log splitter

No Granpa "Lefty"!

Life was different in the old days'...

:D I need to resurrect the old beast just for old time's sake. And no one has been injured that I know of. Although I was never allowed within 50 yards of the operation.
