I've got 2 Scepter Fuel Jerry Cans (5 gallon). I tried tightening the lid as much as my powerful hands can tighten. :p Still leaks.

Can I buy spare gaskets for them? The other can which does not leak i noticed this past run that the gasket broke off the neck and rubber base. i leak test with this one but didn't leak.

not sure what is going on.

is it the plastic or metal can?

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but i think they made metal one years ago!

i have a plastic one and it leaked there is a crack right under the threaded area!

yes they sell the gasket they are Viton Gaskets... you can find them on ebay ....or the place that you got the cans from should also have them...

thanks for the tip. Yeah, it has been a while since I bought them. i'll have to order me a gasket before the next outing.

toy4xfun, they are the plastic ones.

With the plastic scepter fuel cans, if you carry inside the vehicle can you smell the fumes?

No. Taking the necessary precautions not to spill fuel on the outside of the can and lashing it securely inside will help prevent further issues.....

make sure you have the correct gasket for your type of fuel and the lid is tight, not cracked.

Where is it leaking? Around the perimeter of the cap (through the threads) or out of the strap at the top.

Cap/Threads:
Damaged seal surface, bad or improper seal (rubber versus viton), or cracked cap not allowing it to tighten. Or simply not tight enough.

Strap Leak:
Cracked cap flange. The flanges are replaceable but hard to find. Look at the bottom of the can and closely inspect for cracks in the very center of the flange (part that holds the gasket in the cap).

It is "NOT" leaking, what I had asked is "If you carry inside the vehicle can you smell the fumes?" then suddenly it turned into I have a leak. I just asked "if" properly sealed would I smell fumes. New sceptor with the vitron gasket.

My own answer would be "I guess we will find out"

Sorry, multiple questions have been asked here. But to answer yours. I've always been OK inside even though I don't recommend it. I have always carried mine upright in a Hanna Carrier strapped down. No leaks no fumes.

Calm down guy, cruiseroutfit was answering the OP's question, not yours... you know, the guy who started the thread?

It may be leaking out of the strap at the top and the "pores" on the cap. I have seen gas escape through the pores, whatever you call them. Today I bought a viton gasket from a expo forum member. Let's see if that solves the issue.

Thanks for this link. The more time you spend on this forum, the more stuff you tend to buy. This can be a handy tool to have, especially since the jerry cans tend to swell a bit from heat and sun when full and makes the removal of the cap harder.
