Anyone know of a source for replacement gaskets for Scepter fuel cans? Thanks.
This is what I did. I bought a sheet of rubber gasket from McMasterCarr and cut to the right size.If you can find VITON gasket sheeting of the right thickness you can cut your own. All they are is die cut out of a larger sheet.
I just called Army Surplus World and they only sell the rubber gaskets, they dont sell the Viton ones. Rubber is no good for gas. Do a search on fjcruiserforums and there is a thread regarding the problem. Swells the gasket, then the cap. There is a guy making the viton gasket but i dont have his contact info yet, still trying to get it. DaveI picked up several of these, since they were cheap, to try out Buy Gas Can Lid Gasket at Army Surplus World.
The two Scepter cans are ones that I picked up at a surplus store, one still had a gasket but the other did not. These new gaskets are ca. 1-2 mm too wide in both the inner and outer dimensions, but can be squeezed into the cap. With the can which had the old gasket, I left that gasket in place and stuffed in a new one. I filled this can the other day and with the cap on tightly it did not leak even when turned upside down. I stuffed one gasket into the cap of the can which lacked a gasket and filled it also. It still leaked. I've since added a second gasket but have not had an opportunity to test it yet. I'm thinking that with two gaskets it will not leak.
Even though these gaskets may work I'd still like to track down some Scepters.
