Wishing you the best of luck on that!

What a read!

Never had the needle go North.
It was only when I got home and saw coolant leaking that I knew the rad had a crack. Checked the coolant reservoir and was almost empty. I was s***ting bricks
and did all the tests - white smoke, bubbles, milky oil - all negative.

This HG issue has me wondering about going to a 100 series. :hhmm:

Good luck Brent and you are closer to Yota Masters right?

Looks like you took all the precations when you saw the signs, so hopefully its not warped.

Which shop did you end up taking it too ?

Spoke to Eric first. He's out a few weeks with other work and I respect that a great deal with his upfront talk and advice he gave me. Top notch of him! Found a good shop in Lake Forest...I hope. They've done LC HG's before so we'll see.

Hanlon Automotive in Lake Forest. Travis there was extremely knowledgable and helpful answering all my anal questions about the job.

If you dont mind me asking, how much is it going to cost you, parts and labor ?

This is on my long term PM list thats why i ask.

good luck with all that

for us anal cruiserheads, it's really crucial to find a tech who won't mind discussing the finer technical points of things. Few of those around.

Brent, I have some compression and leakdown tests results for my truck on Mud if you'd like a comparison. (The leakdown numbers are specific to the tool used, though.)

Wow that’s quite the story. Happy to hear everything worked out and you got it home safe. It’s crazy the stupid decisions we will make in the heat of the moment. Good thing a cool head prevailed and you did the right thing. If you would too please PM the total cost of the head gasket too. I have a feeling my turn is coming soon with 185k on the original head gasket.

Harry, Tare - PM sent.

Tare - you couldn't be more right. I was not thinking real well Saturday and had changed the oil as cheap insurance for the drive home. I was more concerned with getting my daughter home. She didn't pack extra meds that she's on so we had to get home somehow Sunday. Just wonderful that I was able to take the cruiser too!

Extraordinary the 'family' here and all the solid and fast advice I received on that 80's section thread. Very cool, impartial, dead on accurate advice.

Dave Druck is amazed that U-Haul actually allowed the cruiser on the transport. Frankly I was too!

How's that for a first recovery use of the winch! I'd purchased 4 of those huge ratchet straps at Home Depot expecting 2 front, 2 rear, but that winch just pulled the front end right down very tight with no strain/effort on the part of the winch at all - its the M12000, so plenty of power.

One last thought - I'm convinced that all the extra stress of towing the scout trailer has contributed to this. 4000 lbs up and down the grapevine several times, especially southbound - you basically have your foot on the floor for about 5-6 minutes with the engine totally maxed out. Can't be good.

E - thanks for the offer, but as you say if the leakdown are tool specific, it'd be worthless. I'll post up numbers if I get them...and you know I'll ask. :D

I know the two of us joke with each other about whether an engineer or an accountant is more anal. Right now I'm glad I'm anal enough to know my truck, know my guages and watch them too! If I hadn't noticed that temp guage when I did, I could have been in a lot worse shape.

May have to do that temp guage mod now if not the coolant reservoir warning sensor too!

I sacrificed a chicken to the cruiser gods on behalf of your rig.

And boy did it taste good!

I would have sacrificed a goat, but they don't sell fried goat at KFC.

Seriously, I hope everything works out.

LOL!

I've sacrificed a cow...in the form of a filet mignon and a few red grapes of the Cabernet Savignon variatal myself. More of the later recently!

fingers crossed and on standby

Will say a good old fashioned prayer for you sir.

I appreciate that!

Suspense is killing me. Leakdown and compression test were supposed to be done Friday and assuming they indicated as we all suspect that it's the HG, they were going to start the tear down.

Bummer to hear that. At least when it's done, you won't have to worry about it again for another 20 years or so....

I certainly hope so Marcus! Leakdown and compression tests did indicate a blown HG. They were just getting to removing everything to take the head off yesterday so we still don't know the shape of either the head or block itself yet...i.e. cracks in either.

In the mean time, I've got the trailer turned upside down in the garage. I've wire wheeled and sanded down the eithre underside and primed it with Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer. Need to take pics. Next step is a couple of coats of Rustoleum Gloss Black, mostly for the springs, axle, back of the hubs and metal trim around the outside of the bottom. Still debating whether to use the body undercoating rubber stuff on the rest or not. Mixed reviews on it flacking and drying up after a few years. There's a little on there now I didn't bother to scrap off. Flat black for the complete underside would probably do just fine.

Sorry to hear about the truck Brent, but I'm glad you took the sane approach. Did you buy the DVD for the mechanics? Are you going to have anything else done while they're in there?

For your trailer - don't use the spray on undercoating! Use bedliner. coat the entire bottom, inside the wheelwells and think about the leading edge of the trailer where it might be exposed to rocks kicked up by your rear tires.

I'm curious what the cost estimate is as well (just to compare against what I paid several years ago).

Good luck,
