Is this an alternate light source like the ones that were put into the dash pads on the later fj40s? I have a 1971 fj40 that has no interior lights; having a constant source of light while driving at night would be nice.

Yes it is. I have a 68 40.
My plan was to use it to illuminate the floorboard area near my feet. I was going to wire it in-line with my dome light and dash pad light. It definitely needs a power source. Since I’m installing a vintage air system, I don’t have room for it.
You say you don’t have any internal lights. I’m curious if you have a dome light switch?
