Now that I have the hole saw coming can anyone point me in the right direction for the template?

Clint

The template comes with the snorkel. Did you get the snorkel used? I'd guess I'd try an internet search. If you can't find anything, we can take my snorkel off and you can make a template off of my holes. Although, I think I sealed my snorkel together, as they tell you too, so it may not work to just pull my snorkel off. I'll look around and see if I kept my template, but I have a feeling that I threw it away. Sorry.

The problem with an online source is that the template is bigger than 8 1/2" x 11". Here is a link to an 80-series template - Safari Snorkel Template Info

You could do like Pasquale did and get a hold of Safari Snorkel. Maybe they could send you the template on multiple sheets of paper and you could put it together like they did. Just a thought.

Here's some pix of the install including the GM air box. I bought a 3" to 4" rubber flex adapter at Home Depot and trimmed it on the long side. I hose clamped it over the snorkel flex hose with a thin bead of silicon. This is where I can pull it apart if I need to remove the air box base. On the air box side, I'll fill in the gaps around the rubber flex with sealer to make it water tight.

Elbert, I'm sorting this one out right now. The snorkel hose runs directly into the round opening on the right side of the air filter box. I cut the opening flush and there's a small amount of clearance for the hose to slide through. I want to make this fitting air/ water tight but still have it be easily pulled apart for service if I need to remove the filter box. I figured that I'd simply order a large rubber grommet but turns out that might be a little pricey. I'm heading over the plumbing department this morning to see what I can dream up. I will put up some pictures as soon as I get the job done.

I was looking at that (the idea to install a snorkel) the other day and it seemed like some of the plumbing fittings a lowes would work or might work. Large rubber unions and various other things they have. My air filter also sits on the drivers side fender well. I did remove the small etension that fits on the end of the GM OEM air filter housing that GM uses to pull air out of the fender well. Doubt If I can find that now, but it might be worthwhile to use too. I do think that it might be worthwhile to look at another air fitler housing as the GM one is not goign to be water proof if that is a concern.

I agree about the GM air box not being water tight. The base of mine sits about 48" off the ground so unless I'm planning to cruise through some pretty deep water, I should be ok. With the mods I've made, I will be in good shape in water up to 4 feet deep. But, if I'm planning an expedition with deep crossings, I might be inclined to by-pass the GM filter box and run a direct line with a filter to the stock intake hose for that particular trip. More than deep water, I wanted the snorkel to keep my intake above the dust level as much as possible. Here in the desert southwest, sand and dirt are the enemy.

wonder if one of the FJ62 large air filter housings would be a good swap over into a vortec powereed truck...don't know if space would be an issue. I see where some people are running donaldson brand air filter assemblies..

I've got to many other issues going on right now, but I do want to install a snorkel in the future.

Nice work Simon. I've been wondering how the snorkel job looks/what to do.

I wonder if one would reduce my wind noise on my passenger door? :) Maybe I could drive my wife crazy with the wind noise (vs replace the molding) to convince her we need a snorkel.

Britklr,
Is that a B/H 60 series diesel air cleaner that bolts up on the fender?

I believe it came out of a BJ60. I looked at using a FJ62 aribox, but it would have required a little more fabbing to remove the airmeter assembly.

In order to make all my systems waterproof I still need to move my axle, trans, dizzy, ARB compressor breathers above the waterline.

Also, for really dusty environments, you may consider some sort of pre-cleaner. Either turn the intake around or place an in-line filter at the intake (cloth over the in-take tube) or the ARB pre-cleaner. I filled the air filter/box with dust on my last Moab trip...

Good luck!

Do you happen to have any more pics documenting the modification of that air intake? that looks really sweet.

Here's a couple more. The modified intake mounts to existing mounts on the valve cover so it's very stable. All the smog/vacuum intakes are still intact except for the cold air valve controller (?) that operated off the hot air exhaust manifold intake. I no longer needed it. The flexible hose between the air filter box and the intake came off a Montero. All the other hoses are still routed in their normal route.

Some of my welds look like a mud-dobber did them...first attempt but if I come across another air cleaner I'll give it another try...:)

Good luck.

Great thread, I've been wondering how one would modify the under hood components...

Doing some cleaning in the garage today and found the hole saw! Totally forgot I had it. At any rate it's back up for dibs to the next guy who needs it! I will cover shipping just pay it forward when you are done.

Snorkeling the 60

Dragging up this old thread....Hey Paul...nice to know you're close by - I'll be snorkeling the 60 soon.

I have a question about the additional air cleaner...does that replace the element in the 2F cleaner or did you add that for another reason, is is mandatory? I assumed once we 'cut and turn' the air cleaner you just run the hose to it?

I'm looking for a template as well. I kept the template for my fj cruiser's one just in case I ever needed it but the 60 snorkel came used. It's a pita to put on without a template. If anyone has a template that they can trace on a piece of cardboard or something I'd be willing to pay for postage and all to get it.
