If you are in the heat like we are, you will be hunting a tank like this, at last count I have changed 8 on my TBI 350 since going FI in 03, external fuel pumps suck

We change 2 or 3 in tank pumps per week on all brands of vehicles in our shop, generally at over 150K

Yep, all of the ones I have seen go bad are in the 150K or more range.

Any Progress?

Any Progress on this install?

I just ordered a tank from Discount Radiators. $104.00 with straps.

No progress lately on the tank. I just got my new quarter panels in and will be installing those onto the tub this week. Then I'll install the filler neck and put the tank back in. I'll put pics up when I do.

what side is the filler neck on? just wondering. why didn't you POR it or something? I think this is a great idea and alternative to spending $700-$1200 on an underbed tank.

I did finish the tank with Zero rust when I painted the frame, etc. Just no pics of that. The truck is undergoing a full frame-off rebuild, so there's been a lot of other things getting done. I just welded a new passenger side quarter panel in yesterday, so maybe I'll have some filler pictures soon.

The filler comes out of the passenger side.

We have an s10 tank installed ahead of the axle in one of ours with the reversed rear springs. Works well.

Is it mounted lengthwise under the driver floor?

If so, how is exhaust the routed?

Another downside to the S10 tank is the amount that hangs down in back.

Any other oem tanks out that are a little smaller?

Thanks,
Phil

It is mounted sideways as normal. fills the area between the frame

The exhaust is routed outside the frame (v8 with through the fender headers) amd exits ahead of the rear fenderwells.

It is in an SOA rig and the tanks sits well above the driveshaft, even at full suspension compression.

Mark, you knew SOMEONE would ask, but do you have any pics of that or could you take some? I'm curious how much it hangs down, where your filler neck is and such

The filler neck is snaked up to the rear driver side corner of the rig...the tank is snug up close to the body and it does not hang down at all. Again... it is above the driveshaft even at full compression. I don't have any pics right now. I will take some the next time this rig is at the shop.

The other advantage to an internal fuel pump is it is a good deal more quiet. Externals, especially cheap ones tend to be noisy.

Has anyone ever thought of some how modifying the original tank to accept an internal pump? It would require some cutting and welding as well as looking for a pump of the correct length. I am installing a Ram Jet 350 in my 40 and I have thought about some how doing this. Any ideas?

Internal fuel pump

I did this. It is an internal pump from an '87 mini. I cut the top from the mini's tank and took the bracket pump and all. I shortened the bracket to fit in the depth of the FJ40 tank. I cut out the opening for the 87 mini and then cut the opening in the FJ40 just a bit smaller and welded the 87 mounting ring to the FJ40 tank. I sealed up all the openings for lines in the 40 tank except the one that goes to the filler neck. It all came out rather well... if I do say so.

As you can see from the pictures I used the fuel lines from the 87 pump bracket. My rig is EFI so it was handy to have everything in one place.

Nice looking rig! Do you notice much noise from the pump with it being under the seat? Any idea on the pressure of the pump you installed?
