i'm looking for a waterproof rooftop carrier? any suggestions ?

Sears has a big one that is made by Thule and costs less than $200. I have one and used it a lot until I got a utility trailer. It is waterproof but I managed to get a crack started by a mount by overloading it.

I have it hanging from the rafters in my garage. I mounted it on my Yakima crossbars but could also throw it on my full length Wilderness rack toward the front and put other gear behind it in the slipstream. That would be if I could not take the little trailer.

your talking about a hard plastic model, right?

Yes, this one: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=02872000000

A soft stowable one would be nice for back up but for large luggage etc. I wanted a hard case unit. Compare this one to the Thulie and Yakima ones at places like REI. I thought that the Yak units were hard case material like motorcycle side trunks or helmets but no they are the same material as this sears unit.

BTW the Sears badge is held on by stickum and comes right off, I do not like advertising, especially when it is a re-badged Thulie product.

I have seen links to much nicer units that are real hard shell like motorcycle helmet material but they are pricey. Can not find the links right now but I think is was on MUD where someone posted them.

I have a thule one. They are kinda $$$ but way nice. They are strong, well built, and very rugged. I have stuffed a ton of crap in mine and it always does good (and stays dry). It's also way easy to use and has tons of cool features like a load "strap" system to use when it's only partly filled. Overall a good buy.

x2. i have yakima rocketbox, hauled everything I needed for a month away from home, living dorm style at a fire training academy. got the box at an rei scratch & dent sale for a couple hundred bucks.

also, mountainsmith is now making an organization system for same http://www.mountainsmith.com/store/...&category_id=419d0f5354fdb0389b989eac50f849d3, which Santa DID NOT bring me. :censor: no cookies for you next year!

I'd look on something like craigslist for this type of thing. There are usually plenty of people trying to unload stuff like this. I picked a Coleman one up, brand new in the box for $80.

- x2 what Shahram said about Craig’s list -
-I also own Yakima rocketboxes – Both were Craig’s list finds and I have seen them for $50 -$100 for ones like the Sears/Thule and Yakimas listed the posts above.

Water Proof? No but extremely water resistant yes - on trips all the garbage/recycle and/or wet/muddy gear goes in the box – other items like duffels/suitcases I use large contractor garbage bags if need be as quick lightweight H2o protection. Having a cargo box is a huge space saver for the inside of the truck. I can switch it to the car as storage and so I can fit the truck in the garage. It’s easy on and easier off once you do it a few times. I feel it in the wind but have never really had any problems with them for the past five years or so. I will say that one rattles quite a bit when empty but the other is pretty quiet.

I like the soft plastic carrier bag on the rack.
Keeps things clean, water resistant.
When you get there, you just flatten it with the straps, no more air drag...

Another vote for the yakima.
Im using there middle of the road space box.
Like Cabrito said not waterproof but Its gone through some crazy rain and I havent seen water on the inside yet.
$$$$pricy?? Na. worth every penny

thanks

I use a North Cape model made by Thule. It's a low profile mode and works out well for us.

I have a pack-a-sport or packasport or pack a sport. I've had it since around 2000. It it pretty big, but doesn't look too bad. This is the 115 which is the biggest they make it is 30.5 cu ft and measures 7'7"x44"x14". I had to drill extra holes in the fiberglass bottom of the luggage carrier rack to mount it. I also had to make spacers for between the carrier and rack cross bars.
