Agreed! If only I had 20' of tubing kicking around, a hydraulic pipe bender and some welding skills...they'd be on in a flash ;-)

...before I get too deep into the legs, wondering what type of mount you guys would recommend. Current options:
-Welded to frame with gussets
-Bolt on frame
-Slip on (from bottom) with bolt on top of frame
-U-bolt mount

Bolt on is simple in the respect that I can do the mounting at home, but findings angles is trickier

Weld on is simple if I have access to a welding machine or if someone is able to do some welding for me, also the quickest on the fab end of things.

Thoughts?

G'day Franken60, those sliders look really good. I assume you ended up welding them on? Do you have any pics of the chassis mount / pads where the welded connections are? I am interested to know approximately the size and thickness of the pads.

I'm doing a set for my 105 and also wondering whether to weld or bolt. I've seen many variations of bolt on + brackets etc but very few pics of welded rock rails onto the chassis. I work for a welding and fabrication company so no problems getting it done, but speaking with one of our engineers, he mentioned (in his opinion) that welding a pad onto one side of the chassis would not achieve the same strength as with a full wrap-around bracket like this one below.

My 105 is a family tourer and not a competitiion rock crawling beast so I don't need ultimate strength, and I find the welded option more appealing as it is "fixed" onto the chassis - one less thing to worry about coming loose when travelling 1000's of corrugated kilometers in outback Oz.

Hey Hendrik,

I pm'd you some details

Thanks mate, appreciate the info! After speaking with a few more people in the offroad fabrication business, I have decided to go bolt on with similar mounting to pic above in my previous post. Once done will post some pics.

Cheers man, look forward to the finished product!

In the end I decided to use bolt-on brackets, some pics here of the sliders "trial-fitted" not yet finished or painted but looking good so far! I still need to fit gussets and fully weld the rest of the joins.

awesome job! i really like the fender protection!

bolt on is a nice way to go....still not out of the question for me really if i wanted to pull them off one day

I don't think you can weld them on in Aus without an engineering plate added?

G'day Toshi, I think you a correct and that applies to most other Australian states though not here in WA. It seems that our isolation coupled with our relatively low population has kept us a good five to tens years behind the rest of the country. I'm sure it will change in the future but so far that I am aware (at the moment) we do not need an engineering plate for welding on the chassis here in Western Australia.
