I'm selling my riveted steelies in the classified section and was asked a question about using them with disc brakes. Now I know you can't with disc but could you use it with the disc using wheel spacers? If so what size spacers would work?

Thanks

Hi All:

IIRC the issue with disc brakes and the old-school riveted drum brake steel wheels is clearance between the brake disc and the rivet heads.

So, a spacer that pushes the wheel away from the brake disc should do the trick.

Regards,

Alan

I don't think it would be much of a spacer since it only hits the rivets... maybe just find a welder to weld them then grind off the rivets :)

It's actually the caliper that interferes, but anyway...

Years ago I thought about grinding rivets & welding but B4 doing it I asked this esteemed website if it would work & was told it would not work because there are differences in the design of the wheels too.

I have riveted wheels on my disc front 77 and I used 1/4" spacers and had to do a little grinding on the calipers. Not anything structural, just some corners sticking out. All better. That was over two years ago I think. Anyway, no problems.

Yeah, I have riveted wheels on my 81. I ground a little on the wheel, ground a little on the caliper, and used 1/4" spacers. It works fine.

To be exact, it is not the rivets that are the problem. On the inside of the wheel, there are tabs for the rivets. The rivets hold the inner wheel to the outer wheel. Those tabs are what catch on the caliper.
